Food Scrap Compost Give-back Day: Saturday, May 04

compostpileOn Saturday May 4, 2024, the Village is giving away free compost to Scarsdale residents at the Scarsdale Recycling Center, 110 Secor Road, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, rain or shine. It’s first- come, first-served, so bring a pail, bucket, or other receptacle, and take home some compost! Prior events have been well attended, so plan to be there early. The food scrap compost can be used in one’s vegetable garden, flower beds, or to enrich turf in place of chemical fertilizers.

Residents are strongly encouraged to join the Scarsdale Food Scrap Recycling Program – it’s easy and results in a meaningful reduction to the waste stream, which results in less trash incineration. On May 4, volunteers will be available to answer questions, help you get started, and food scrap recycling starter kits and rolls of compostable bags will be available for purchase.

The high-quality food scrap compost being given away is provided pursuant to the successful Village of Scarsdale residential Food Scrap Recycling program. Over 3 million pounds of food scraps have been recycled since the beginning of the program in January 2017!

For any questions about the May 04 compost giveaway, food scrap recycling, or to sign up for the food scrap recycling program, please email composting@scarsdale.com.

The Legacy of the Hudson River School

Cole 1836 The OxbowOn Wednesday May 8 from 2-3 pm the Scarsdale Library will host Dashiell Jordan, Head Librarian at the Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson, to discuss the legacy of the Hudson River School of artists. Considered one of the first truly American schools of art, Hudson River School painters - the term was initially used disparagingly by European art critics - were inspired by the aesthetics of Romanticism to depict the vistas of North America using themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement. Respected and popular in the early 19th century, the school's American pedigree and focus on landscapes fell out of favor by the turn of the 20th century. Reevaluations and rediscoveries in the 1960s and 1970s have since led to renewed interest in the Hudson River School, and their paintings have performed well at auction ever since.

Mr. Jordan will discuss the trajectory of the Hudson River School's popularity and reputation in America and abroad. There will be time for questions and answers after the presentation.

About the Hoff-Barthelson Music School Master Class Series
Master class coaching by guest artists has been a cornerstone of Hoff-Barthelson’s curriculum since the School’s founding in 1944. This distinguished tradition has continued this season with a roster of world-class musicians and educators including Daniel Phillips, violin; composers Reiko Füting and Alyssa Weinberg; Hai-Ye Ni, cello; John McCarthy, piano; and Alexa Still, flute.

Master classes provide a transformative experience for both students and audiences. Following meticulous preparation, students showcase their talents, receiving invaluable feedback and guidance from master teachers. This interaction challenges students to approach their pieces in new and critical ways, resulting in inspiring and enlightening performances. Yet the impact extends beyond those on stage—all attendees can learn by observing the creative process firsthand. As iconic performers coach the next generation, the audience gains insight into musical artistry and interpretation. Even developing musicians are granted a rare glimpse into the mastery of world-class artists.

According to Gabriella Sanna, Executive Director of Hoff-Barthelson Music School, "Alexa Still's mastery of the flute is truly extraordinary, and we are honored to have her as the finale to our 2023-24 Master Class Series. Author Talk: Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape at Scarsdale Library

A RelyeaOn Saturday May 11 at 3 pm at Scarsdale Library, Alison Cupp Relyea will share the journey behind the publication of her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape, which came out in early November. In her essays, Alison weaves together music and literature in a way that gives the collection shape and creates common themes. The essays also draw on history, reaching into the past to inform her first-person version of the present. Lastly, the collection is evidence of the importance of writing groups and the arts in general. Alison has been in the same writing group for about six years now, and the community of writers gave her the feedback and support she needed to turn her weekly writing and passion for music into an essay collection. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

Alison Cupp Relyea is an educator and a writer. She recently published her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape. She helped found a literary festival called Watershed. Alison lives in Rye with her husband, Rich, and their three children, Rob, Eliza, and Ian. Alison began her teaching career in New York City, where she earned a Master's in Museum Education from Bank Street College. After teaching elementary school in Manhattan for a decade, she moved to Rye in 2014 and has worked for the past six years at the Rye Historical Society. Alison is a founding member of the pRYEde Community Group, a nonprofit in Rye that collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations to support and raise awareness for LGBTQ+ youth and families. As a result of her work in the community, she was awarded the NAACP's Freedom History Champion Award in October 2023.
