Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and career journalist and editor who will speak on the topic: Real News, Alternative Facts, and Journalism's Future

Bill Grueskin has overseen news organizations ranging from a small weekly newspaper to major websites. Bill began his career as a reporter and editor at the Daily American in Rome. He then served as a VISTA volunteer and founding editor of the weekly Dakota Sun on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota.

He also worked as a reporter and editor in Baltimore and Tampa before moving to The Miami Herald, where he eventually became city editor. On his first day in that post, Hurricane Andrew hit Dade County, and the Herald's coverage of the storm won the Pulitzer Gold Medal for public service. At The Wall Street Journal, he worked initially as a Page One editor and then as managing editor of its online publications. He managed the staff during and after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Later, at Bloomberg, Bill served as an executive editor, where he oversaw efforts to train the global news staff to reach broader audiences.

Bill began his role at Columbia in 2008, where, as academic dean, he oversaw a dramatic transformation of the Journalism curriculum to give students more flexibility to focus on skills ranging from video to data visualization to long-form digital journalism.

Bill lives in Scarsdale, with his wife, Caryl Yanow, M.D. They have three daughters: Ellie is a high-school student, Caroline is a reporter in North Dakota, and Julia just moved to Auckland, New Zealand.

Tickets are $40 per person through Monday, May 12 and $45 per person after May 12. High school and college students are $20.
