Denim Day in Scarsdale

On Wednesday April 17, 2024, SFCS and the Scarsdale Safe Coalition: Children, Families and Community encourages you to Wear Jeans With Purpose. Although Denim Day will be acknowledged internationally on April 24, 2024, we will acknowledge Denim Day in Scarsdale on April 17th because of the Scarsdale Spring Recess.

Denim Day has become a symbol of protest opposing erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. In this rape prevention education campaign, we ask community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protesting the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it.

SFCS and the Safe Coalition asks that you take a picture(s) of yourself wearing jeans with your family, friends and of course colleagues. Please post these pictures to your social media sites with #denimday and tag the Safe Coalition’s Facebook page. SFCS has stickers that say “Ask Me About Denim Day” so that others will understand why you are wearing denim. Stickers are available at the office. I hope that you will support the agency’s efforts to raise awareness and bring an end to sexual assault.

Book Discussion at Scarsdale Library: The Librarianist

The Librarianist“Though we do not wholly believe it yet, the interior life is a real life, and the intangible dreams of people have a tangible effect on the world.” - James Baldwin.

Please join Nancy Zachary in the Scott Room  of Scarsdale Library on Wednesday April 24 at 2 pm to discuss The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt.

"An old man’s routines are interrupted by a woman in pink in this wistful fable. Bob Comet, a retired librarian, is 71 and has lived an unremarkable life in Portland, Oregon, in a mint-colored house that belonged to his late mother. “He had no friends, per se; his phone did not ring, and he had no family.” The year is 2005, and this dreary state of affairs stems partly from the fact that shortly after he married her in 1959, Bob’s wife ran off with his best friend. Things begin to change for the retiree when he encounters a woman about his age in a pink sweatsuit staring at the refrigerated beverages in a 7-Eleven. ... A quietly effective and moving character study." - Kirkus.

Book Discussion: Lady Tan's Circle of Women

Nancys Book Group May 2024“Though we do not wholly believe it yet, the interior life is a real life, and the intangible dreams of people have a tangible effect on the world.” - James Baldwin.

Please join Nancy Zachary in the Scott Room at Scarsdale Library on Wednesday May 22 at 2 pm to discuss Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See.

"The lives of women in 15th-century China are illuminated in this engrossing novel. Tan Yunxian was a real historical figure who published a book about her career as a physician, but little is known about her personal life. See creates a rich story about a girl born into an aristocratic family. That accident of birth should have written her fate: limited education, bound feet, arranged marriage, childbirth, and a life spent entirely behind the walls of family compounds. She doesn’t escape all of those things, but after the early death of her mother, she’s raised by her paternal grandparents, who are both doctors, and given an unusually advanced education, including in the healing arts they practice. ... Women’s friendships in a world where they have little freedom shape a quietly moving book." - Kirkus.

The Legacy of the Hudson River School

Cole 1836 The OxbowOn Wednesday May 8 from 2-3 pm the Scarsdale Library will host Dashiell Jordan, Head Librarian at the Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson, to discuss the legacy of the Hudson River School of artists. Considered one of the first truly American schools of art, Hudson River School painters - the term was initially used disparagingly by European art critics - were inspired by the aesthetics of Romanticism to depict the vistas of North America using themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement. Respected and popular in the early 19th century, the school's American pedigree and focus on landscapes fell out of favor by the turn of the 20th century. Reevaluations and rediscoveries in the 1960s and 1970s have since led to renewed interest in the Hudson River School, and their paintings have performed well at auction ever since.

Mr. Jordan will discuss the trajectory of the Hudson River School's popularity and reputation in America and abroad. There will be time for questions and answers after the presentation.

Author Talk: Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape at Scarsdale Library

A RelyeaOn Saturday May 11 at 3 pm at Scarsdale Library, Alison Cupp Relyea will share the journey behind the publication of her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape, which came out in early November. In her essays, Alison weaves together music and literature in a way that gives the collection shape and creates common themes. The essays also draw on history, reaching into the past to inform her first-person version of the present. Lastly, the collection is evidence of the importance of writing groups and the arts in general. Alison has been in the same writing group for about six years now, and the community of writers gave her the feedback and support she needed to turn her weekly writing and passion for music into an essay collection. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

Alison Cupp Relyea is an educator and a writer. She recently published her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape. She helped found a literary festival called Watershed. Alison lives in Rye with her husband, Rich, and their three children, Rob, Eliza, and Ian. Alison began her teaching career in New York City, where she earned a Master's in Museum Education from Bank Street College. After teaching elementary school in Manhattan for a decade, she moved to Rye in 2014 and has worked for the past six years at the Rye Historical Society. Alison is a founding member of the pRYEde Community Group, a nonprofit in Rye that collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations to support and raise awareness for LGBTQ+ youth and families. As a result of her work in the community, she was awarded the NAACP's Freedom History Champion Award in October 2023.
