Former NY Times Reporter to Discuss Why Manufacturing Still Matters (Sun. 29 Oct, 2017 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Louis Uchitelle, a former economics writer for the New York Times, will discuss the decades-long decline of manufacturing the U.S. and explain why it remains important at the Scarsdale Public Library on Sunday, October 29, at 2 p.m.

Uchitelle notes that manufacturing has declined from generating nearly 30 percent of U.S. income in the 1950s to less than 12 percent today. Meanwhile, it expands in countries such as China and Germany that have a strong industrial policy. Many Americans are only vaguely aware of the many consequences—including a decline in their self-image as inventive, practical, and effective people—of the loss of that industrial base.
Registrations is required at the library website, scarsdalelibrary.org.
