Demolitions Appear to be Decreasing in Scarsdale

157BrewsterConstructionThe recent slowdown in sales of high end homes may finally be effecting local developers. This month, for the first time in many months, the agenda for the Board of Architectural Review includes applications for additions, a portico, retaining walls and a patio – but has no applications for new homes for consideration at the June 20 meeting. Furthermore, the monthly meeting of the Committee for Historic Preservation – which usually includes four or five homes to be cleared for demolition – has been cancelled this month. Could this mean that developers have lost their zeal, at least temporarily, for teardowns and new construction? What's going on in your neighborhood? Send us your comments in the section below.

Scarsdale use to have moratoriums on the insane rate builders were permitted to tear down beautiful homes in good condition because of resident's outcry. But now Scarsdale elected officials and the Committee for Historic Preservation are in the pockets of builders. Corruption runs deep in Scarsdale.

"Do we really need this?" you are living in a dream world if you think that all the houses coming down are gems. There are plenty of terrible houses being knocked down and it sounds like you just have sour grapes that the new ones are better built than yours. Those 4 and 5 million dollar homes are not made with vinyl siding. You may not like their size or style but, they are built much better than the ones from 20 or 50 years ago.

+14 #4 The tough reality 2016-06-20 08:20
is that this phenomenon means that our land is in fact quite valuable, and that larger and better-located parcels must be assessed higher. That reality is not music to my own ears, as I have lived in my home for over twenty-five years. Still, value-based tax, as a property tax is, needs to consider market-determin ed value, and not arbitrary, politically driven criteria.

Quoting Do we really need this?:
... Scarsdale's beautifully constructed homes ....

May not be beautifully constructed. But definitely beautiful looking. Much better than the vinyl McMansions which all seem to be the same color and have many of the same exterior features. Could be the same architect making a killing?

My house built in 1924 has everything falling apart - all the pipes are rusted, needs painting etc. but will probably make a profit if I do the repairs before selling to a non-developer for under $1.5Million. (Though high taxes specially with this new eval that was done specifically to address the rich and reward a supervisor of the last reval may make selling a long process).

AND THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE BASING THE LAND VALUE ON RYAN, MAYOR AND TRUSTEES? PLEASE THINK THIS OVER AGAIN BEFORE IT RESULTS IN A BIG FINANCIAL MISTAKE FOR EVERYONE IN SCARSDALE - THANK YOU!

Committee for Historic Preservation? REALLY! All this committee does is approve the tearing down of Scarsdale's beautifully constructed homes only to permit the building of another exciting vinyl sided McMansion colonial as tall as a small apartment building jammed onto a postage sized lot sitting at it's neighbors door step. Who's this committee really preserving, Scarsdale or builders pockets?.
