Bilingual Volunteers Needed for Intro2America Program

volunteerHigh school can be a scary, intimidating time for students, especially those unfamiliar with the culture and language of their peers. The Intro2America Program addresses the special challenges facing newly arrived immigrant high school students, with little or no English language skills, to the Yonkers Public Schools.

JCY-Westchester Community Partners is pleased to announce a multi-year implementation and expansion of their early intervention, comprehensive immigrant program called Intro2America.

This program will be a continuation of our partnership with New York Life, and will build on the success of the first year at Yonkers High School "ESL Center". They will continue to strengthen the ESL Center at Yonkers High and expand the program to Lincoln High School as well. In 2014 they plan to extend the hours to create after school programs as well.

They need volunteers who speak the students' language to assist students in the ESL Center. As a volunteer you will:

  • Act as a tutor to help students with class work and homework assignments.
  • Help them with pronunciation and translation.
  • Interpret cultural differences and nuanced language which is difficult for new English speakers to understand.
  • Serve as a mentor by creating a trusting relationship with the student and help establish an enriched environment for learning and academic assistance.
