Mobile Passport Unit in Scarsdale On August 31

(This notice was sent to Scarsdale10583 by the Scarsdale Village Manager's Office) The Westchester County Clerk's Mobile Office will be visiting Chase Road at Boniface Circle, on Monday, August 31st to process passport applications from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Passports have always been a necessary document for those who traveled outside of the North American continent, but now a U.S. Passport will be required for travel even closer to home. So as you are planning your next vacation or business trip, here are some things to keep in mind:
Do not wait until the last minute: Apply now. Routine passport applications generally take approximately four to six weeks. For an additional charge, expedited service will result in your obtaining your passport in no more than three weeks. But only in emergency circumstances can a passport application be processed more quickly, so do not delay.
PLEASE NOTE: You will need a passport to enter the United States by air, by land or by sea unless you are a child under the age of 16 entering by land or sea with proof of U.S. citizenship or an adult with another travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.
Be sure to bring the proper documentation: You will need proof that you are a United States citizen such as a previous unexpired U.S. Passport, an original or certified copy of your birth certificate, a consular report of birth abroad or a naturalization certificate. You will also need proof of your identity such as a current valid driver's license or a government issued identification card. For minors under the age of 16, both parents should appear together and sign the application of the child. However, if only one parent appears and signs, that parent must submit the other parent's notarized Statement of Consent form (DS-3053) and a photocopy of their identification. The Statement of Consent form can be found at www.WestchesterClerk.com.
Fees: The fee for an adult passport is $110.00 and for a child's passport is $80.00. Fees can be paid by money order or check, only. There is an additional $25.00 service fee that can be paid by money order, check or credit card. Applications will also be accepted for the U.S. Passport Card for land and sea border travel, only. The fee for adults is $30.00 and for children, the fee is $15.00 with an additional $25.00 service fee. Be sure to bring original documents with raised seals to avoid having to make a second trip. Scarsdale Firefighters Commended for a Job Well Done

Scarsdale Firefighters went above and beyond on May 27, 2015 when the Fire Department was dispatched to a 500 gallon underground propane tank which was leaking at 11 Mayflower Road. A propane vapor cloud could be seen moving in the direction of Colonial Road and Captain Cockerill and his team quickly formulated a plan to safely mitigate the situation. They dispersed the leaking propane into the atmosphere, despite the potential harm to the firefighters. In addition, the firefighters began metering the nearby homes to determine exactly how far the propane vapors were spreading, so they could minimize the danger by isolating any potential ignition sources in the area.
Thanks to Captain Cockerill and his team, a potential catastrophe was averted and there were no injuries or damage to any homes reported.
The Village Board has recently approved the Fire Department Awards Committee recommendation that Captains John Cockerill and James Seymour and Firefighters Brian Robinson, Brian Kelly, James Marinello, Stephen Mulcahy, Thomas Dwyer, Francis Sheehan, Timothy Duffy and Probationary Firefighters Rory Tully and David Yolinsky receive the Unit Citation.
Khali Gibran Muhammad to discuss race and criminal justice at Congregation Kol Ami

Khali Gibran Muhammad will discuss race and the criminal justice system following a Shabbat service and dinner at Congregation Kol Ami on Friday July 24th. Visitors are invited to dinner but reservations are required.
Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and a Visiting Professor at The CUNY Graduate Center and will speak on "Race and the Criminal Justice System: Reflections on Baltimore and Staten Island," on Friday July 24th at 8 pm.
Muhammad is an expert on African-American history and holds a doctorate in US history from Rutgers University. A former associate professor of history at Indiana University, he is a contributor to a 2014 National Research Council study, "The Growth of Incarceration in the United States: Exploring Causes and Consequences, and is the author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America" (Harvard), which won the 2011 John Hope Franklin Best Book award in American Studies. His research focuses on racial criminalization in modern U.S. history and has been featured in a number of national print and broadcast media outlets, including the New York Times, New Yorker, Washington Post, NPR, Moyers and Company, and MSNBC.

Edgemont Teen Gets Accolades at Carnegie Hall

Edgemont's Ananya Gurumurthy earned second place in the American Protégé International Vocal Competition on July 5th at Carnegie Hall where she sang "Alleluia" from Exsultate Jubilate by Mozart.
Ananya will be a freshman in high school in Edgemont in September. She is an aspiring soprano who is passionate about music and was selected for the All-County Chorus for the past three years. Ananya sings many different styles, including classical, jazz and blues. Recently, Ananya was selected by her school to participate in the Jazz Chamber Choir. She has also completed five levels of certification in the New York State School of Music (NYSSMA) festival for voice and piano. When she is not singing, Ananya can be found spending time with her friends at school or relaxing with her family and playing with her younger brother.
Ananya sings with vocal coach Anna Veleva, a renowned opera singer who is a graduate of the Mannes College of Music with a MM degree in Voice.

We received this note from a California woman who is looking for an old friend, who she believes lives in Scarsdale. See if you can help her out:
Hello: I'm contacting you from California. I'm trying to locate an old boyfriend from the 1960's. His name is Leon Duftler. He would be in his mid-eighties now. He lived in Manhattan when I dated him and a search online showed a man about the right age living in Scarsdale. Have you any idea how I might locate him? I sent a letter with no street address - just the city - and it was returned. His family was religious - he had been married and had a daughter, but was divorced several years later.
That's all I know about him. If you can help me locate him, I would very much appreciate it. I will be in Manhattan in September with my daughter and would love to see him again after all these years. We had originally met at a dude ranch in the Catskills named Sunnycroft Ponderosa but it has ceased to exist.
