Billy Planer on Jews and Blacks in the Civil Rights Era

Date: Friday, March 05, 2021 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Speaker at Scarsdale Synagogue: Billy Planer on Jews and Blacks in the Civil Rights Era
Friday, March 5, 8:00 p.m.

To attend: Email Temple Administrator, Fawn Mendel at fawn@sstte.org if you are interested in receiving the zoom link.

Following the 7:30 p.m. Shir Shabbat service, join Scarsdale Synagogue's Brotherhood and Billy Planer to explore the reality of the relationship between the Jewish & Black communities during the Civil Rights era.

Billy Planer founded Etgar 36 in 2003 as a political and social justice summer program for Jewish teens and continues to lead students across America and engage them in difficult and uncomfortable conversations with multiple sides of social and political issues to develop their opinion and voice.

Billy has expanded his Etgar 360 tours in recent years to include adults and offers an opportunity for them to visit landmarks in Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham. We have rescheduled our congregation's 2020 trip to March 2022. Details to follow.

Discussion points:

-Why were there Jews on both sides, and the sidelines of the Civil Rights movement?
-What was the role of Judaism in the activism of young people in the 1960s?
-What are the implications for the streets of America today?

Scarsdale Synagogue is a reform Jewish congregation located at 2 Ogden Road, Scarsdale, NY. 10583. 914-725-5175. www.sstte.org
