Rough Sleepers: Nancy's Book Group

Nancys Book Group Rough Sleepers"Character is the fingerprint of your soul" - Frank Sonnenberg.

Please join Nancy Zachary in the Scott Room of Scarsdale Library on Wednesday May 21, 2025 at 2 pm to discuss Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder.

"Noted long-form journalist Kidder rides along as clinicians try to serve one of Boston’s most marginalized populations.

"The term rough sleeper is not used much in American English. It’s a borrowing from the British way of describing the people who sleep where sleep is not intended: doorways, sidewalks, culverts, etc. Kidder’s hero, Dr. James Joseph O’Connell, has spent decades with volunteer and paid workers driving in a medicine- and supply-stuffed van to the places where this population gathers. ... O’Connell, now well past retirement age, is the tutelary angel of the piece, but many lesser heroes work around the clock to save lives and treat the downtrodden with dignity. The job is thankless and endless.

"A searching, troubling look at the terrible actualities of homelessness" - Kirkus.

Comedian Bios

Nick Viagas is a New York based comedian. He can regularly be seen at New York Comedy Club, or his monthly show Struggle Bus with Ivy Wolk at Second City. In 2024 he was named a finalist of the New York’s Funniest competition at New York Comedy Festival. He regularly headlines around the country. He has traveled the world opening for Mike Recine, as well as domestically with Tina Friml, Jiayoung Summers, and did dates with Ralph Barbosa on his 2024 theater tour. He has appeared in Billboard Magazine, The New York Times, and the New York Observer for comedy, and can be heard regularly on Gas Digital. But his biggest credit? His heart.

Alex Pavone’s unique brand of comedy is part rambling insane man, part storyteller, part daredevil. You really never know what’s coming next. One of the more personable comedians, Alex sees the stage as a launching point, instead of a home during his act. Known for walking out into the audience, from tabletop to tabletop, and liberating a few shots along the way, Alex Pavone’s brand of storytelling is one not easily forgotten. Alex has opened for Bobby Lee, served as a panelist on Video on Trial and MTV’s Cocktales.

Nancy Parker has appeared on major talk shows such as Arsenio Hall, Merv Griffin, and Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert, as well as a recurring role on ABC’s Sledgehammer.Nancy toured with Peter Allen, and has performed her comedy at Carnegie Hall. In the early nineties, her well-known impressions of celebrities made the circuit of Morning Zoos on the radio. She has also written for both Jay Leno and Rosie O’Donnell. Nancy was the first comedian ever to play Caroline’s Comedy Club in New York City, and along with Billy Crystal performed opening night at the famous Comic Strip.

Matt Vita’s “life of the party” energy, surfer vibes, and unmistakenly grizzled look have made him a fan favorite in the NYC scene, especially when somebody that looks so “gnarly” can write so intelligently... Matt tours the northeast and is the co-founder of indie film production company Gnar Bois, LLC. Matt is also an actor, producer, and award-winning freestyler that has performed for and with such legends as Rahzel, Questlove, and members of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Ben Rosenfeld's comedy is “playfully dark, seriously smart.” Ben’s comedy blends his family’s experience as Russian Jewish immigrants in America with his philosophical beliefs, political observations and unique characters. Ben has been seen on BuzzFeedVideo and is slightly “TikTok famous” with over a quarter-million followers and 11 million likes.
