Master class coaching by guest artists has been a cornerstone of Hoff-Barthelson’s curriculum since the School’s founding in 1944. This distinguished tradition has continued this season with a roster of world-class musicians and educators including Daniel Phillips, violin; composers Reiko Füting and Alyssa Weinberg; Hai-Ye Ni, cello; John McCarthy, piano; and Alexa Still, flute.

Master classes provide a transformative experience for both students and audiences. As iconic performers coach the next generation, the audience gains insight into musical artistry and interpretation. Even developing musicians are granted a rare glimpse into the mastery of world-class artists.

Author Talk: Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape at Scarsdale Library

A RelyeaOn Saturday May 11 at 3 pm at Scarsdale Library, Alison Cupp Relyea will share the journey behind the publication of her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape, which came out in early November. In her essays, Alison weaves together music and literature in a way that gives the collection shape and creates common themes. The essays also draw on history, reaching into the past to inform her first-person version of the present. Lastly, the collection is evidence of the importance of writing groups and the arts in general. Alison has been in the same writing group for about six years now, and the community of writers gave her the feedback and support she needed to turn her weekly writing and passion for music into an essay collection. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

Alison Cupp Relyea is an educator and a writer. She recently published her first essay collection, Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape. She helped found a literary festival called Watershed. Alison lives in Rye with her husband, Rich, and their three children, Rob, Eliza, and Ian. Alison began her teaching career in New York City, where she earned a Master's in Museum Education from Bank Street College. After teaching elementary school in Manhattan for a decade, she moved to Rye in 2014 and has worked for the past six years at the Rye Historical Society. Alison is a founding member of the pRYEde Community Group, a nonprofit in Rye that collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations to support and raise awareness for LGBTQ+ youth and families. As a result of her work in the community, she was awarded the NAACP's Freedom History Champion Award in October 2023.

The Scarsdale Business Alliance (SBA), in partnership with the Village of Scarsdale, is thrilled to announce the launch of Destination Scarsdale, beginning Sundays starting May 12th. This collaborative initiative, endorsed by Westchester County and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bicycle Sundays, aims to showcase Scarsdale's diverse amenities, increase foot traffic in our Village center, drive economic activity, and promote community engagement.

On Sunday, May 12th, County Executive George Latimer, along with key politicians and stakeholders from Westchester County and Scarsdale, will be present for the grand ribbon-cutting ceremony of Destination Scarsdale at 9:30 AM.

Key Components of Destination Scarsdale include:

● An Enhanced Farmers’ Market: Down to Earth (DTE) Markets will host the expanded 2024 market every Sunday from 9AM to 2PM, from May 12th through November 22nd. The market will feature locally sourced produce and artisanal goods, fostering connections between residents and local vendors.

● Live Performances, Family Fun Activities, and Community Tables: The SBA will engage local performers and artists to showcase their talents and contribute to the cultural richness of our town. In addition, the SBA will host community tables for Scarsdale community partners, Westchester County non-profit organizations, and SBA member professional services providers.
● Events: Throughout the season, the SBA will host events on designated Sundays, including our Health & Wellness Fair in the fall.

Play for a Cure at Metropolis

On Monday, May 20th, Hunters CMT4B3 Research Foundation will be hosting our 2nd Annual "PLAY FORE A CURE" Golf Tournament at the Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, N.Y., to fund research for life-saving treatments for children suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a rare form of muscular dystrophy.

Why are we so passionate: In May of 2020, six year old Hunter, was diagnosed with CMT4B3. The Doctors told us there was no cure or treatment. They told us to go home, love him and come back in a year to monitor the progression of the disease. Untreated, CMT causes the nerves to deteriorate leading to muscle weakness, limb deformities and paralysis. Children with CMT4B3 lose the ability to walk, use of their hands and potentially their sight and/or hearing. Eventually the disease can compromise the patient's breathing, which can lead to premature death.
