Sunday April 6, 11:45 am
Church of St. James the Less
Parishioner, lifelong area resident, and history teacher John McNally talks to us about one of the most famous events for St. James on a national stage: the rector's refusal of Communion to the parishioners who denied access of a young Christian man of Jewish parentage to the Scarsdale Golf Club's annual debutante ball, the Holly Ball. Among other guests, including local rabbis, John will be joined by Geff Kempsell, the son of that rector, the Rev, George Kempsell, who remembers the event and its aftermath well. If you'd like, join us at 10:30 am for our church service at which the current rector, the Rev. Astrid Storm, will be reading Fr. Kempsell's sermon from the pulpit.

Book Discussion: The Mystery of Mrs. Christie (Wed. 9 Apr, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Nancys Book Group Mystery of Mrs. Christie"Character is the fingerprint of your soul" - Frank Sonnenberg.

Please join Nancy Zachary in the Scott Room to discuss The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict on Wednesday April 9 at 2 pm at Scarsdale Library.

"In December 1926, mystery writer Agatha Christie really did disappear for 11 days. Was it a hoax? Or did her husband resort to foul play?

"When Agatha meets Archie on a dance floor in 1912, the obscure yet handsome pilot quickly sweeps her off her feet with his daring. ... Although the war keeps them apart, straining their early marriage, Agatha finds meaningful work as a nurse and dispensary assistant, jobs that teach her a lot about poisons, knowledge that helps shape her early short stories and novels. While Agatha’s career flourishes after the war, Archie suffers setback after setback. Determined to keep her man happy, Agatha finds herself cooking elaborate meals, squelching her natural affections for their daughter (after all, Archie must always feel like the most important person in her life), and downplaying her own troubles, including her grief over her mother's death. Nonetheless, Archie grows increasingly morose. In fact, he is away from home the day Agatha disappears. ... Benedict concocts a worthy mystery of her own, as chapters alternate between Archie’s negotiation of the investigation and Agatha’s recounting of their relationship. She keeps the reader guessing: Which narrator is reliable? Who is the real villain?

"A compelling portrait of a marriage gone desperately sour" - Kirkus.

McCarthyism and the Scarsdale Schools - A Deep Dive into the Battle of the Books (Mon. 21 Apr, 2025 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

SCARSDALES BATTLE OF THE BOOKS digital signJoin local history librarian Dan Glauber for this lecture on Monday April 21at 7:30 pm on the Battle of the Books. From 1949 to 1954, a group of residents calling themselves the Committee of 10, and later the Citizens Committee, waged a battle against what they saw as the infiltration of Scarsdale schools by Communists and fellow travelers. They objected to books, speakers, presenters, and even Scarsdale residents who they accused of having Communist connections. Scarsdale's "Battle of the Books," as it became known in the national news, was one of many examples of school districts that came under fire during the McCarthy era. Scarsdale's experience was notable as the only example where the McCarthyites were defeated. Dive deep on the issues and the people involved.
