Quaker Meeting House and Cudner Hyatt House to be Restored and Redeveloped

Meetinghouse1The new owner moved the Quaker Meeting House to avoid infringing on the set back requirements. The new foundation in front of the house is ready. When we last reported on the Scarsdale Historical Society’s property at 937 Post Road in January 2019, it was up for sale again after the first buyer experienced legal difficulties. Now another buyer has been found and plans are moving forward to subdivide the property into three lots, while preserving, restoring and expanding both the Quaker Meeting House and the Cudner-Hyatt House, the farmhouse next door.

The Quaker Meeting House, now almost 300 years old, has been moved many times. It dates back to 1739 and was originally located in Mamaroneck on the Westchester Path, now called the Boston Post Road. In 1768 the meeting house was moved to a wooded lot on Weaver Street at Quaker Ridge Road. In 1975 it was donated to the Scarsdale Historical Society and moved again to 937 Post Road, next to the pre-revolutionary farmhouse known as the Cudner-Hyatt house built in 1743.

Now the meeting house has been re-located again, but this time by just a few feet. A buyer called BNB Tech LLC MeetingHouse3purchased the .70 acre lot with both the meeting house and the Cudner-Hyatt house and plans to expand the Quaker Meeting House which cannot be taken down and restore the Cudner Hyatt house. On the third lot, which is about 6,600 square fee, they can build another house that will front on Lee Road.

In order to comply with setbacks, the owner rotated and moved the Quaker Meeting House so that it fronts of Boulevard. The architect’s plan shows that the meeting house structure will be maintained and expanded into a larger home.
