One of Scarsdale’s oldest homes, dating back to 1732 is now on the market at 31 Mamaroneck Road. According to the Scarsdale Historical Society and archives from the Scarsdale Public Library, the Griffin-Fish House is also known as “The Grange.”
The original owner Jonathan Griffen bought 58 acres along Mamaroneck Road in 1731-32 and built the house there. He belonged to a Quaker family who sowned
several houses and farms throughout Scarsdale and Mamaroneck. Jonathan Griffin’s adopted son, Jonathan G. Tompkins, became the father of Daniel Tompkins who was Governor of New York and James Monroe’s Vice President from 1817 to 1825.
British General William Howe used the Griffin-Fish House as his headquarter during the Battle of White Plains in 1776. The house is built on a hill, which provided a clear view of troop movements. After the Revolution, the first town meeting was held in this house and the men in attendance were Quakers, mainly from the Cornell and Griffin families.
In Jonathan Griffin’s will, dated 1784, he gave the property to his nephew, Benjamin Griffen.
A historic marker that still stands on the property has the Scarsdale seal and lists past and present owners of the house including Jonathan Griffen 1732, George De Kay 1800, George W. Tompkins 1814, Joseph Hatfield 1815, Catherine B. Fish 1850, Cornelius B. Fish 1890, Arthur S. Meyer 1927.
In 1850 an addition was built on the west side which included the living room and bedroom overhead.
The house and 1.07 acres of property are on the market now for $1.500,000. Economic Woes Take Their Toll on Scarsdale Real Estate Plus Sales and Featured Listings

A teardown at 39 Church LaneThe numbers are in – and they confirm what many feared. The new tax law, economic uncertainty and demographic trends have taken their toll on the market for homes in Scarsdale.
In 2018 only 210 homes sold, down from 253 in 2017, a 17% decline in the number of homes sold. The median price also declined 9.7% to $1.508 mm with the average price at $1.807 mm, a 3.5% decline.
Edgemont fared much better with 91 homes sold in 2018 compared to 87 in 2017, a 4.6% increase. The average price fell slightly from $1.254mm to 1.14mm in 2018 and the median price also declined from $1.202mm in 2017 to $1.082mm in 2018.
Despite the weakened appetite for homes in 2018, developers continued to tear down existing homes to replace them with new construction. As one realtor pointed out, the homes that were torn down are typically far less pricey than the new construction, which depletes the Village’s inventory of lower priced homes and makes it difficult for young families to move in.
Anne Moretti of Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s put the sales figures for Scarsdale into perspective, saying, “It was the lowest number of homes sold in 7 years; however, it was only the second correction since the 2008 low. Otherwise, it’s been a steady upward climb since then. 2018 sales were off primarily due to a perfect storm of factors including the Tax Reform SALT cap, quadruple interest rates hikes, and a tough fourth quarter on Wall Street. Despite strong 2nd and 3rd sales quarters, buyers got the jitters as we ended the year. Whispers on Wall Street about reduced bonus pools due to global trade tensions and lower third quarter earnings reflect the nervousness of buyers as we rounded the year. I see it as a market correction which was exaggerated by unusual factors. All markets correct, including real estate. Looking ahead to 2019, we will continue to be in a challenging market, price-wise, but savvy sellers who adjust to the current market will find a steady stream of ready, qualified buyers. Three of my client sellers just went into contract, joining 34 other Scarsdale sellers currently in contract. So 2019 appears to be off to a good start!”

Another Scarsdale estate may soon be subdivided into three lots. The new owners of a 3.75 acres property at 2 Cooper Road have applied to subdivide the property into three lots where they will maintain the current house and add two more. The house sits on the corner of Cooper and Murray Hill Roads where there is 1 acre zoning.

Here is an update on the status of the Scarsdale Historical Society property at 937 Post Road along with more society news from President Randy Guggenheimer:
In April 2017, the Scarsdale Historical Society entered into an agreement to sell its property at 937 Post Road to 937 Post Road Associates LLC subject, among other things, to a façade easement on the Cudner-Hyatt House and a prohibition on subdividing the property into more than three lots. This transaction was terminated in November 2018 because the last of the necessary approvals for the sale was not obtained within the contract contingency period. Prior to expiration of the contingency period, the Scarsdale Historical Society had worked diligently with the New York State Attorney General’s office and had secured its consent to the transaction, as required by law.
Subsequently, the Attorney General’s office withdrew the consent when it became aware of the legal difficulties of one of the principals of the purchaser, 937 Post Road Associates LLC. The Scarsdale Historical Society then elected not to seek to extend the contingency period and terminated the Contract.
As a result, the Scarsdale Historical Society is again putting its property at 937 Post Road up for sale subject, among other things, to a façade easement on the Cudner-Hyatt House and a prohibition on subdividing the property into more than three lots. Any transaction will be subject to a number of contingencies, including the approval of the New York State Attorney General’s office.
The society has completed two documentary films which are available on their website at www.scarsdalehistoricalsociety.org. We are thrilled about our upcoming documentary film which will premiere in early 2019 on the history of the Bronx River. We will be making announcements about this soon.
They are continuing to work with the Scarsdale Public Library to preserve and digitize many of the back issues of the Scarsdale Inquirer. Most of the issues from 1901-1975 are now available online. They can be accessed through our website or the Library website.
A new book, Westchester County: A History by Field Horne is now available. This book was commissioned by the Westchester County Historical Society and partially funded by a grant from the Scarsdale Historical Society.
