On Saturday May 4, 2024, the Village is giving away free compost to Scarsdale residents at the Scarsdale Recycling Center, 110 Secor Road, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, rain or shine. It’s first- come, first-served, so bring a pail, bucket, or other receptacle, and take home some compost! Prior events have been well attended, so plan to be there early. The food scrap compost can be used in one’s vegetable garden, flower beds, or to enrich turf in place of chemical fertilizers.

Residents are strongly encouraged to join the Scarsdale Food Scrap Recycling Program – it’s easy and results in a meaningful reduction to the waste stream, which results in less trash incineration. On May 4, volunteers will be available to answer questions, help you get started, and food scrap recycling starter kits and rolls of compostable bags will be available for purchase.

The high-quality food scrap compost being given away is provided pursuant to the successful Village of Scarsdale residential Food Scrap Recycling program. Over 3 million pounds of food scraps have been recycled since the beginning of the program in January 2017!

On Wednesday May 8 from 2-3 pm the Scarsdale Library will host Dashiell Jordan, Head Librarian at the Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson, to discuss the legacy of the Hudson River School of artists. Considered one of the first truly American schools of art, Hudson River School painters - the term was initially used disparagingly by European art critics - were inspired by the aesthetics of Romanticism to depict the vistas of North America using themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement. Respected and popular in the early 19th century, the school's American pedigree and focus on landscapes fell out of favor by the turn of the 20th century. Reevaluations and rediscoveries in the 1960s and 1970s have since led to renewed interest in the Hudson River School, and their paintings have performed well at auction ever since.

Mr. Jordan will discuss the trajectory of the Hudson River School's popularity and reputation in America and abroad. There will be time for questions and answers after the presentation.

About Alexa Still
Alexa Still is a renowned flutist celebrated for her exceptional artistry and unparalleled virtuosity. With over 20 recordings that have garnered unanimous praise, she has captivated audiences worldwide with performances that are both technically impeccable and profoundly expressive.

Born and raised in New Zealand, Alexa pursued her musical education in New York, where she earned her doctorate from SUNY Stony Brook. She quickly rose to prominence, winning prestigious competitions such as the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition and the East and West Artists Competition. At the age of 23, she returned to her homeland as the principal flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Throughout her illustrious career, Alexa has performed as a soloist in 16 countries, including many world premieres. She has served as President of the National Flute Association (USA) and has held teaching positions at institutions such as the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the Oberlin Conservatory, where she currently serves as Professor of Flute.

SHS students, Marin S. and Emily H., lead this Sunday crochet club for kids in Grades 3 through 6* (*last year's regulars are welcome too) on Sunday May 19 from 12:30 - 1:30 pm. Crochet Club starts in the Children's Program Room 30 minutes after the Library opens on most Sundays during the school year.

All levels are welcome - from the complete crochet novice to the experienced crochet kid! Supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Pre-registration is required for each participant for each week. Each registrant's parent/guardian is invited to stay in the room with their child. Please provide parent/guardian contact information (required for kids under 10 and recommended for kids 10 and older) if parent/guardian is not staying with their child.

Note: There is a 7:1 kid-to-instructor ratio, so the registration cap may change from week to week. Please cancel your registration if your plans change so your spot can go to someone on the waiting list for the day you will miss.

Unattended Children
Parents and Caregivers should be attentive to children under their care at all times during the program. Children are not permitted to be left unsupervised by their caregiver unless over the age of 10.
