Five More Homes to be Demolished Plus a Big Sale

It was business as usual at the August meeting of the Committee for Historic Preservation where six homes were on the agenda to be cleared for demolition. Five out of the six were approved and a decision on one was deferred to the following meeting. There was a small fracas about a charming cottage on Sage Terrace built in 1922, when the realtor showed up to represent the elderly owners of the house. Since she did not have the necessary paperwork giving her power to represent them, the committee waited while she drove to Greenacres to retrieve them. Though the originally house encompasses the remains of a barn from 1799, interior features do not warrant preservation. Once the owners arrived approval to tear down that house was granted as well.
The Committee was also due to discuss changes to the code that regulates preservation but committee chair Paul Diamond said they were awaiting feedback from the Board of Trustees on the committee's prior comments to the draft.
While the new code awaits review, realtors and developers are having a heyday selling Scarsdale homes, tearing them down, building and selling huge new houses that extend to the last possible inch of buildable space. Strong sales continued this week. We also noted, that with so much construction going on in town, thefts at construction sites are on the increase.
