Beth Gelles Discusses "Crazy for College" at Scarsdale Library
Tuesday, April 21, 2026 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Crazy for College: The Stories, The Secrets, & The Shot of Sanity You Need to Make it Through Admissions
On Tuesday April 21 at 6:30 pm, Scarsdale’s Beth Heller Gelles, author of Crazy for College (2026), will appear at the Scarsdale Library with Duncan Wilson and you’re invited.
The college admissions process has gotten a little out of hand. Between test-optional policies, shrinking acceptance rates, and a lack of transparency around what colleges are genuinely looking for, families are overwhelmed and often more stressed than they need to be.
In conversation with Duncan Wilson, a current school principal and former school superintendent of a public school in Westchester, Scarsdale resident Beth Heller Gelles, co-founder of Acceptance Ahead and author of Crazy for College: The Stories, The Secrets, & The Shot of Sanity You Need to Make it Through Admissions, presents a candid, funny, and refreshingly honest discussion of what really matters (and what really doesn’t). Gelles has visited 160+ campuses and guided hundreds of families over the past fourteen admissions cycles, helping them navigate the process with clarity, perspective, and far less chaos at home.
Gelles offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process and share practical, reassuring advice on:
What matters, what doesn’t, and where families should focus first
How to rethink activities and interests in a way that feels authentic
Building a thoughtful, well-balanced college list based on who a student is — not just the name on the sweatshirt and protecting your teen’s well-being — and your relationship with them — along the way.
Part memoir, part guide, and part sanity check, Crazy for College is for parents who want to support their kids without losing their minds in the process.
Class fee includes an advance copy of the book, due out in May.
Beth Heller Gelles is the co-founder of Acceptance Ahead. For more than fourteen years, she has worked closely with students and families navigating the increasingly complex college admissions process, bringing perspective and calm to one of the most stressful chapters of modern parenting.

Compost Giveback Day: Saturday April 25, 2026
Saturday, April 25, 2026 8:00 pm - Sunday, April 26, 2026 3:00 am
As part of its Food Scrap Recycling Program, the Village of Scarsdale will be offering free, high-quality compost to residents on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Recycling Center (110 Secor Road) from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Compost will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents are encouraged to arrive early and bring a pail, bucket, or other container to take some home. This nutrient-rich compost is ideal for use in vegetable gardens, flower beds, and lawns, and can serve as a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers.
This compost giveaway, held in celebration of Earth Week, is also an opportunity for residents to learn more about and participate in the Scarsdale Food Scrap Recycling Program, which has diverted over 4 million pounds of food scraps from the waste stream since its launch in January 2017. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and help residents get started, and food scrap recycling starter kits and rolls of compostable bags will be available for purchase.
For more information about the Food Scrap Recycling Program, visit scarsdale.gov/foodscrap. For questions about the compost giveaway or the program, please email [email protected].

Beverly Shipko Presents Motherhood in Art
Tuesday, May 05, 2026 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Motherhood in Art (Hybrid), on Tuesday, May 5 at 4:30 PM EST at the Scarsdale Public Library
As both an artist and art historian, I’ve long been fascinated by how motherhood has been explored across time, not just as a role, but as a deeply human experience that reflects identity, devotion, strength, and connection. A beautiful example is Fra Filippo Lippi’s Mother and Child shown above.
Together, we’ll explore how artists across cultures and eras have interpreted this enduring theme, from sacred and symbolic works to more intimate and contemporary expressions.
Thank you to my daughter, Bonnie, for providing refreshments.
Registration is requested. Please click here to register on the Scarsdale Library website and select either the in-person option or the virtual option. The Zoom link will be sent one hour before the program. Additional details, including parking, are available on my blog
Please feel free to bring others or share this invitation. This is a public event, and all are welcome. We would love to see you there on May 5th at 4:30 at Scarsdale Library.
