Author Talk at Scarsdale Library: Mailman by Stephen Starring Grant
Sat. 13 Dec, 2025 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Saturday December 13 at 11 am at Scarsdale Library:
Have you ever considered the immense undertaking of the American Postal Service and the dedicated men and women who make it happen? Join us to hear from Stephen Starring Grant as he does just that and shares his exuberant, profound, and hopeful memoir Mailman: My Wild Ride Delivering the Mail in Appalachia and Finally Finding Home.
"Steve Grant was laid off in March of 2020. He was fifty and had cancer, so he needed health insurance, fast. Which is how he found himself a rural letter carrier in Appalachia, back in his old hometown.
"Suddenly, he was the guy with the goods, delivering dog food and respirators and lube and heirloom tomato seeds and Lord of the Rings replica swords. He transported chicken feed to grandmothers living alone in the mountains and forded a creek with a refrigerator on his back. But while he carried the mail, he also carried a whole lot more than just the mail, including a family legacy of rage and the anxiety of having lost his identity along with his corporate job" - Simon & Schuster.
Copies of Mailman will be available for sale and signing during the event.
About the presenter
After twenty years as a consumer strategist, Stephen Starring Grant became a rural letter carrier during the pandemic. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.

5K Run to Support Meals on Wheels, December 14
Sun. 14 Dec, 2025 9:00 am - 10:00 am
Ethan Grossberg, Scarsdale High School junior, and Becca Friedland, SHS sophomore, were inspired by the work their moms were doing to reinvigorate Meals on Wheels Scarsdale, so they decided to form the first ever Meals on Wheels Scarsdale Junior Board. The board began its work in early 2025 with the goal of enhancing the meal delivery experience for all meal recipients. Between birthday bags and Thanksgiving baskets, they continue to brainstorm and execute ways to bring a smile to the faces of the MOW recipients.
In order to bring their ideas to life, the junior board, which also includes Ayla Kantor, Lila Rosen, Hunter Ross and Ryan Sussberg knew they would need to do some fundraising. Becca and Ethan came up with the idea to organize a 5K race in Scarsdale to help raise money to cover the costs of the junior board initiatives, as well as have additional dollars to keep Meals on Wheels running effectively. The first ever Meals on Wheels Frosty 5K is scheduled for December 14th at 10:00 am at Scarsdale High School. We hope Scarsdale residents will register to come support this special, and very necessary, organization. People can run, walk, come alone, bring a friend, come as a family...however they want, we just hope to see them there! See the link and flyer for registration information.
