Sometimes, though rarely, a decision by the Committee for Historic Preservation to deny permission to raze a home actually sticks and the house is saved.

This week a mid-century modern home at 8 Overlook Road was sold again, after the current owners were denied permission to tear it down.

As we reported on Scarsdale10583 in July 2018, the home was purchased for $2.97 mm in May 2018 and the new owners applied to demolish it. However it was designed by Edgar A. Tafel, a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright and at one point was occupied by Richard Ottinger who served six terms in Congress and later became the Dean of the Pace Law School.

Architect Tafel was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and had built other homes in Larchmont, Bedford, Greenwich and Ridgefield. This house is the only example of Tafel’s work in Scarsdale. In addition, Tafel designed churches, including the First Presbyterian Church on Fifth Avenue and 12th Street in New York along with a chapel at JFK airport as well as a fine arts building at SUNY.

The house was also called out by historian Andrew Dolkhart, who authored the 2012 Cultural Resources Survey of Scarsdale. In his report he said “Designed by prominent Frank Lloyd Wright disciple Edgar Tafel, this Mid-century Modern house has a horizontal profile, typical of Wrightian design, accented by the use of long thin Roman bricks. The house also has a hip roof and overhanging eaves. There is a prominent garage and a front entry set back from the street.”

This week it was sold again for $2,750,000 – and hopefully the new owners plan to live in it.

Scarsdale Village will offer two free hours of parking in the downtown business district from December 21, 2018, through December 25, 2018, at specifically marked metered locations. So do your holiday shopping in the Village and enjoy a free space.

However, also note that overnight parking is banned on all Scarsdale streets from November 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019 between the hours of 2 and 6 am. Why? The Village needs to keep streets clear so that they can plow snow and clear streets. So keep your cars in your garage or driveway until April.
