SHS Seniors Kick Off Their Final Year with Annual Chalking Tradition

IMG 1459In the early morning hours of Wednesday September 9, the pavement outside the Brewster Road entrance of Scarsdale High School was transformed into a bright canvas of murals, designs, inside jokes, and senior pride. Taking place from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, members of the Class of 2027 gathered for the school’s annual Senior Chalking event, which is an exciting local tradition that marks the start of their final chapter at SHS.

Wearing matching senior apparel, students spread out across the entrance walk with sticks of colourful sidewalk chalk. Despite early morning hours, the turn-up quickly became a bustling student crowd as dozens of classmates arrived to have fun and leave their mark. Throughout the rest of the day, underclassmen, peers, and faculty walked through the display, admiring the colourful artwork covering the entryway.

For many seniors, the event was less about artistic perfection and more about spending time with their friends before the bell rang and before they explored their own paths (in life).

Krishaana, a senior girl at SHS, noted that while the event caught a few students by surprise, the turnout built rapidly.

"After 20 minutes, everyone in our grade showed up and it was super fun and wholesome, " she shared. "It’s a fun way to start the year, and it really shows how much we have grown as individuals and as a community. My favorite part was just everyone coming together and contributing.”

Coby, a senior boy, also had a splendid morning experience."I didn't go in with one specific group in mind, so I just jumped around and had so much fun,” he reflected.

“For the past couple of years, you go to school and see all of the seniors chalking, and now you're actually living in it, which is very cool."
For Coby and his friend Emma, they enjoyed personalizing their section of the pavement with meaningful memento drawings of their years of friendship.

"We made references to TV shows and movies that we like, inside jokes that me and my friends will recognize when we walk past, even if no one else gets them. It was so great to put those memories down as a piece of art.”

As the school day began, the artwork remained as a welcome backdrop for our entire SHS community and as a cheerful reminder of the bonds built over the years and the exciting year ahead.
