Two Deer Hit, Brush Fires Burn in Dry Leaves and Homeless Woman Found Indisposed in Station Overpass

Brush Fires: Dry weather and winds are causing brush fires around the metropolitan area, and Scarsdale is not immune. See below for reports of several leaf fires around the Village. At the meeting of the Scarsdale Village Board on November 12, Village Manager Alex Marshall asked resident to refrain from using fire pits in these dry conditions. She said, “Do what you can to prevent brushfires. She also announced the lighting of the Scarsdale Christmas Tree at “Light the Dale” on the evening of Friday December 6 in Boniface Circle. She said, “The only lighting the Dale we want to do is of the tree in the Village.”

On Nov. 6, a Boulevard resident was burning leaves improperly. There was no method to contain the fire and no sources of water or extinguishers nearby – as required for an open burn. Firefighters extinguished the fire and advised about safety.

A small brush fire of leaves and dry brush was burning on a Heathcote School footpath on Lincoln Rd Nov. 8. Firefighters promptly extinguished it and overhauled the area. No cause could be determined.

On Nov. 9, a brush fire was burning in a leaf pile at the curb and extending to a residential woodland garden. Firefighters extinguished it and overhauled the area. No cause could be determined.

On Nov. 9, a Franklin Rd. resident was burning leaves in a grill. Firefighters extinguished the fire because it was no safe and did not comply with NYS regulations.

Arrested
Following a car accident at Morris Ln. and Heathcote Rd. Nov. 10, in which a car struck a curb, police arrested a 70-year-old Florida woman who was suspected to be driving while intoxicated. She was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense), operation of a motor vehicle with at least .08 of one percent of alcohol in the blood stream, and driving with an open container of alcohol. She was released on her own recognizance and appeared in Village Court that day.

Stolen
A Garth Rd. storeowner reported an employee was observed stealing rolls of toilet paper from the store Nov. 7. He wanted to document the incident but not press charges. He said he was going to fire the employee.

Identity theft and scams
On Nov. 4, a Fox Meadow Rd. man reported that someone used his social security number to fraudulently apply for a loan.

A Garden Rd. man received a call that his son was in trouble and he needed to send money for his son’s safety Nov. 8. He called his son, who was fine, and realized the call had been a scam.

Disputes
Police were called to a Mamaroneck Rd. house because the resident no longer wanted a contracted health aide in her house and the aide was allegedly refusing to leave Nov. 6. No incident had occurred that prompted the resident to dismiss the aide. Police spoke to the aide’s employer who said a new aide would be dispatched to the residence, so the other aide could leave.

On Nov. 9, a passenger called police to report a dispute with an Uber driver. Patrol responded to Post and Edgewood roads and spoke with passengers who stated that while on their way home their Uber driver started driving erratically. They requested that he stop and let them out. After they got out, the Uber driver started yelling at them and then left in an unknown direction.

Suspicious
A caller reported that a crawl space door of a Barry Rd. house for sale was removed Nov. 4. Police checked the crawl space and did not find any signs of criminal activity.

Workers at 7-Eleven reported a woman seemed to be falling asleep inside the store and was taking a very long time to collect items to be purchased at 2:15 a.m., Nov. 6. Police arrived and observed the woman. She declined assistance, made her purchases and left the store.

Dangerous
Youths were reportedly climbing onto the roof of a building near Wilmot Rd. Nov. 9. Security cameras captured the incident. Police went to the scene and did not see any kids on the roof. No damage was reported. Police advised the building manager to make modifications to the building to prevent access to the roof.

Homeless
A homeless woman was reportedly changing clothes inside the crosswalk bridge at the Scarsdale train station Nov. 5. Police went to the scene and found the woman, who was wearing minimal clothing. Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps was called to evaluate the woman’s condition, and the scene was turned over to MTA police.

On Nov. 7, a woman was wandering around the parking lot at Village Hall. She appeared to be in a state of confusion, stating that she was trying to get to her friend’s house. Patrol requested SVAC for an evaluation, which the woman refused. Patrol provided a courtesy ride to the woman's last known address.

Help
A Gaylor Rd. resident reported hearing loud singing outside their house Nov. 7. Police heard nothing. The person was deemed to be experiencing auditory hallucinations and was advised to contact their doctor the next day.

At 2 a.m., Nov. 10, worried Rural Dr. parents called police because they could not get in contact with their 15-year-old son, with whom they had last had contact at 11 p.m., Nov. 9. It was soon determined that the son was in good condition and had fallen asleep at a friend’s house.

Cars and roadways
On Nov. 4, following a car accident at Post and Popham roads, one driver requested police assistance because the other driver, a woman, could not speak English very well. At that time, it was determined that the woman driver, from Mt. Vernon, was unlicensed and uninsured. Police issued appropriate summonses.

On Nov. 5, numerous leaf piles on Oak Lane were disrupting traffic flow. Police notified the highway department.

Police notified utility providers about a drooping wire on Brookline Rd. Nov. 6.

On Nov. 8, a caller reported a road rage incident on Post Rd. He said the other driver, also a man, was standing outside in front of her vehicle. Upon arrival, police observed two cars stopped in the right lane with their hazard lights on. One driver was standing outside his vehicle leaning against his trunk. He stated the operator of the second car had honked at him earlier when he had changed lanes. He stated he may have “accidentally cut him off” due to a visible neck mobility restriction. He stated he had stopped because he observed the occupants of the other vehicle filming him and told him they were calling the police, to which he stated he would rather remain on scene and explain the situation. The operator of the other car stated the man had approached his vehicle aggressively. All parties were cooperative with patrol; no violations were observed, and no damage was reported or observed.

Animals
A driver hit a deer on Heathcote Rd. and watched it walk away from the accident Nov. 4. Police found fur on the driver’s bumper, but did not find the deer.

On Nov. 5, a caller reported an injured goose on Tisdale Rd. Patrol observed the goose. It appeared that a stick was somehow attached to the goose’s foot. When patrol got close to the goose it flew away and did not appear to be injured.

A Westchester County fire truck struck a deer on Weaver St. and Griffen Ave. Nov. 7 around 4:30 p.m.

Village code
On Nov. 4, police removed illegally posted signs from Mamaroneck Rd. and Crossway.

On Nov. 5, police removed illegally posted signs from Huntington Ave.

Police dispersed kids, who were playing basketball, from a Boulevard basketball court after dark Nov. 6.

Leaves in a huge pile were blocking Chesterfield Rd. Nov. 8. Police notified the homeowner, who agreed to move the leaves.

Lost and found
A passerby found a woman’s bag and wallet on Post Road Nov. 7. Police returned the items to their owner.

On Nov. 8, a caller reported losing an iPhone near the intersection of East Parkway and Spencer Place.

Car keys found on Rock Creek Lane were given to police Nov. 9.

Firefighters
On Nov. 4, firefighters helped an elderly Brewster Rd. couple install a smoke detector.

On Nov. 5, firefighters stood by for Con Edison at the site of a leaking gas-fired fire pit. The unit was red-tagged by Con Edison.

Firefighters removed a smoking, unattended pot, from a Lincoln Rd. house Nov. 5. They opened windows to ventilate because of collected smoke.

Firefighters helped SVAC with a lift assist in a Black Birch Lane house Nov. 6.

On Nov. 6, firefighters helped a Dunham Rd. resident with a faulty range. All gas was off, and no leaks were detected. Service was recommended to fix a broken igniter.

Firefighters assisted with a car accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway Nov. 8.

On Nov. 9, a Bradford Rd. resident accidentally got locked out of his house. Firefighters and police checked the man’s ID, and enabled him to gain entry to the house.
