On Jan. 11, firefighters responded to a report of smoke in a structure, possibly from the fireplace, on Obry Drive. On arrival, firefighters were directed to the family room located above the garage, where the fireplace was located. They encountered a smoke condition in the family room with smoke pushing out of the floor adjacent to the fireplace. They evacuated the family, including a dog. They stretched a 1.75" handline to the garage located below the fireplace. In the fire room, they opened up the floor adjacent to the fireplace where there was active fire. They extinguished the active fire and checked for extension. They need to remove the stone hearth and adjacent wall coverings to locate the floor joists involved in fire. They shut the main circuit breakers on two panels in the basement. Con Ed advised the homeowner to have the system inspected by a certified electrician prior to restoring power. The Scarsdale Cause and Origin Team responded and commenced an investigation. The cause of the fire was accidental, due to embers that migrated between the firebox and hearth during normal use of the fireplace. One firefighter was transported to White Plains Hospital for right shoulder and right knee injuries caused by a slip and fall on ice.
