Drugs, Thefts, and a Death from the Scarsdale Police

Smoking: A Gatehouse Road woman turned over a backpack that she found near her home to police on August 6. The pack contained a boarding pass belonging to a Claremont Road man as well as two grams of a green leafy substance in a plastic bag. Police contacted the man whose name was on the boarding pass and he said he would speak to his son about the contents of the backpack.

At 2:30 pm on August 8, police saw three young men leaving Butler Woods in two cars. Police checked the area and found a glass bong, a marijuana pipe, a marijuana grinder, smoking tobacco, and a glass mason jar that contained a small bag of marijuana. Police brought these items to headquarters and placed them in an evidence locker.

Drunk: A Fox Meadow Road man called police to say that a drunk woman was in front of his home at 11:48 pm on 8/7. Police arrived and found the woman who appeared to be intoxicated. Police took her home.

Death: Gladys Singer, age 97 of Wakefield Road passed away on the morning of August 10th. Her aide found that she had died when she checked on her at 7 am but reported that she was still breathing at 2 am but not doing well. The aide called Singer's daughter who came to the house at 3 am. The medical examiner was called and the body was transported to a funeral home.

Missing:

More Stolen Bikes: A black mountain bike, valued at $500 was stolen from the bike rack at East Parkway and Christie Place sometime on August 4th. The owner locked it to the rack in the morning and when he returned at 6:45 pm the bike lock was cut and the bike was gone. Also on August 4, a Red Diamond Back hybrid bicycle, valued at $350 was stolen from Scarsdale Avenue. The owner locked it to a fence opposite the Scarsdale Hardware Store at 9:45 am and when he returned at 6:20 pm both the bike and the lock were gone.

A 17 year-old young man who works at Camp Pathunke in Scarsdale reported that $550 was taken from his wallet while he worked at the camp on August 4. The money was inside his wallet in his backpack which he left in a cabinet at the Middle School while he worked. At 4 pm he discovered that the cash was missing from his wallet though everything else was intact.

A Pinecrest Road woman called police at 9:05 am on August 4 when she could not find her 11 year-old son. Shortly thereafter she learned that his grandfather had picked him up earlier in the morning.

Theft:

The owners of a home on Kensington Road reported that several items were stolen from the home during an estate sale at the house. Following the sale the residents noticed that a closet and window seat were taped off, open, and that a laptop computer, a pair of Gucci sunglasses, and two handbags were missing.

Found:

On 8-5, police notified the owner of a 1996 gray Ford, which was left in the Christie Place garage for two – four days to have the car removed from the lot. The car had a broken axle and was propped up on a jack.

A wallet was found in back of the Quaker Ridge School at 2 pm on August 10th. Police contacted the owner and he picked it up.

Animals:

Turtles: Police received a report that four Chinese men had taken turtles out of library pond and were kicking them and stepping on them. Police canvassed the area and did not find the suspects.

Dogs: A Gatehouse Road woman called police at 9:19 pm on 8/6 when she found two large German Shepards on her lawn. Prior to the arrival of the police, a neighbor retrieved the dogs. The caller asked police to follow-up as the dogs have been on her property several times.

Woodchuck: A sick woodchuck was reported at a Heathcote Road home on the morning of August 7. Police found the woodchuck, saw that it was struggling and received permission to dispatch it. The homeowner was told to have it removed from his property.

Bat: A Sheldrake Road man called to say that a large bat was in a bedroom of the house at 8:30 pm on 8/7. Police found the bat, opened the window and allowed the bat to exit.

Fire:

The pool house at a home on Cooper Road went up in flames at 7:41 pm on August 5 while the homeowners were out. Volunteer firefighters, Scarsdale firefighters, and teams from White Plains, Greenville and Hartsdale assisted in putting out the fire. The pool house was being renovated at the time and the damage was estimated at $60,000. The Westchester County Arson Task Force is investigating the cause of the fire.

Police received a call about a fire on Butler Road at 10 pm on August 9th. They found that kids had started a bonfire at a home.

Help: An East Rockaway woman called police when her developmentally disabled daughter got out of the car on Mamaroneck Road and ran into the woods. When police arrived the daughter had returned to the car and took her medication. The mother said she would return to Long Island and consult a psychiatrist.

Identity Theft:

On 8-6 a 49 year-old Wood's Lane man reported that someone had used his personal information to open many credit card accounts in King of Prussia, PA and used the cards to make extensive purchases. Accounts were opened at Brookstone and LL Bean, where the person purchased a down jacket, cameras, and two pair of boots on the credit card. In addition he received an Ann Taylor credit card in the mail and found that $1,841 in merchandise had been charged to that account. Accounts were also opened at Barneys, J. Crew, and the Pottery Barn and $23,000 in purchases were made at Barneys, $3,900 at J. Crew, and $2,900 at the Pottery Barn. The victim called the credit bureaus and reported the fraudulent accounts and charges.

Scam: A Stonehouse Road woman and a Corlayn Road woman both reported the receipt of multiple calls from someone claiming to be with the IRS. Police told them this was a scam.

At 12:31 am on 8/7 a Bell Road man called police to say that someone was using his name to send threatening messages to his ex-girlfriend via Facebook. He said he did not create the Facebook account. No screenshots were shown to substantiate the complaint.

A Cornell Street man said that he was receiving threatening text messages from a landscaper. The landscaper wanted to collect funds that were owed but the homeowner said that the work was not complete. Police advised the man that this was a civil matter.

Graffiti was found on the wall of the stairwell of a Christie Place Garage on August 8. The writing was done with a black sharpie that was found at the scene.

Accident: At 9 am on Thursday morning 8-7 the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet was traveling west on Drake Road. The car in front of him stopped but the driver of the Chevy hit the car in front, then went into the oncoming lane of traffic and the car rolled over and stopped. The driver of the Chevy said he felt dizzy.

Damage: A Sage Terrace man called police on the afternoon of 8/9 to say that the rear window of his 2004 Infiniti had shattered when he closed the driver's side door. He asked police to investigate whether this was a result of criminal activity but they observed no problems.

Toilet: A Highland Way woman called police on 8/5 to say that a red toilet had been sitting on its side of the edge of her driveway for the past week and was an eyesore. Police spoke to the neighbor who left the toilet there who said she would contact the sanitation department to have it removed.

Lost: A Woods Lane woman called police when she dropped her cell phone down a storm drain on Chase Road at 8:15 pm on August 5. Police advised her to call the Highway Department to see if they could help.

Noise: A Richbell Road man called police at 7:52 pm on August 6 to complain about loud music emanating from his neighbor's property. The man felt that the neighbor was directing the music toward his house intentionally. Police spoke to the neighbor who said they would turn off the music by 8 pm and added that they had filed a lawsuit about a fence between the two properties. He believed the neighbor was complaining about the music to retaliate for the suit.
