The Scarsdale Varsity Hockey team won their 5th straight game with a 6-1 win vs. Mamaroneck at the EJ Murrays Memorial Skating Center in Yonkers Wednesday, January 14th.
Early in the first period, Mamaroneck took a 1-0 lead just 1:27 minutes into the game. From that point on, Scarsdale scored six straight goals highlighted by a big day from the Kowalski brothers (Mati and Lucas) who both contributed two goals each to the win.
Freshman Mati Kowalski tied the game late in the first period with his first career varsity goal. His older brother, Junior Lucas Kowalski, then scored the next two goals for Scarsdale, both in the second period.
Charlie Starr, and the 4 other players on the ice, skate to the bench after scoring his power play goal.
At the end of the second period, Scarsdale held a 3-1 lead. A beautiful goal by senior defenseman Johnathan Mullin, along with a power play goal by senior Charlie Starr put the game away in the third. Mati Kowalski, then scored a short-handed empty net goal for his second goal of the day to cap off a 6-1 win against the neighboring town and heated rival, Mamaroneck Tigers.
Senior netminder Buddy Meiselman had another stellar day in net. He made 32 saves. In this 5-game winning streak, Meiselman has allowed only one goal in four of the last five games.
The Kowalski brothers pose together after getting the bucket as the “players of the game.”It was a great win all around for the boys as they improved to 6-2 and got a huge win against a non-league opponent, where there is no love lost between each of the school's athletic teams in any sport. Given the close proximity of the two towns, the Scarsdale-Mamaroneck rivalry is especially heated. Whenever the maroon team and the orange team face off, the competition is always taken to another level and the players/spectators are sure to feel the battle for their team’s school and town pride. This long standing, and deep rooted rivalry makes for the best games in all of Section One and definitely in Southern Westchester. |
The hockey team is back at it on Friday as they travel across the river to face Pearl River. The game will be at 4PM at Sport-o-rama in Monsey, New York.
Scarsdale Sports Back in Action To Open Up the New Year
The Scarsdale Raiders winter sports teams returned to action for the first time in 2026 with some fire. The first week back was filled with key moments and highlights including athletes who stood out and teams pulling off big victories. We got it all in the inaugural edition of the Raiders Recap.
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team had a big week to open up the new year. Despite falling just short in a crushing defeat against Pelham, the boys bounced back to beat Horace Greeley 54-52 and Ketcham 76-29 to go 2-1 on the week. The team goes on the road to play Mount Vernon next week followed by a two-game tournament in Springfield, Massachusetts over the weekend.
Girls Basketball
Varsity A lost in their only action of the week in a close tilt against Ursuline 37-30. They will make the trip up to Dutchess county to play the Arlington Admirals on Wednesday.
Boys Hockey
The hockey team had a big week finishing 2-0. They beat White Plains 4-2 on Thursday and then finished the second part of a back-to-back with a gritty win against Amity (CT) 3-1 on Friday. Senior goalie Buddy Meiselman stopped 70 out of 73 shots behind the pipes for the ‘Ders. Next up, hockey will take on Mamoraneck on Wednesday and then Pearl River on Friday.
Boys Swim
Off of the Block in the new year, the Men’s swim won both of their meets, improving to 4-2 for the season so far. On Tuesday, they traveled up to North Rockland and left with a victory. The team then faced off against Harrison in a home matchup at Westchester Community College on Thursday and won. The swim team’s next meet is on Tuesday 1/13 at Sarah Lawrence against Pelham.
Ski Team
The ski team began 2026 with a strong race at Mohawk Mountain. Both the boys and girls teams left with first place finishes. There were plenty of skiers who made their varsity debut and had career bests. Both the girls and boys squads had 4 skiers who were making their varsity debut. Stella Van Arsdale and Jaden Hernandez did their thing for the girls team, finishing 2nd and 6th place overall respectively. And Avery Kaiden made her varsity debut and ended the race as the #3 overall skier for the girls. On the boys side, Alex Xia made his varsity debut and edged out Andrew Jeremiah by 0.07 seconds to finish as Scarsdales #1 overall skier on the boys side. This impressive feat by Xia earned him skier of the meet.
Boys Wrestling
The men's wrestling squad opened up the new year with two meets. First, the team traveled to Clarkstown South for a dual meet on Thursday. Despite many not getting the results they wanted, the team made the trip over the Mario Cuomo bridge again for a meet at the Kohl invitational at Suffern High School this past Saturday. Here, the Raiders had a big day finishing 5th overall as a team and many having big performances. On an individual basis, Luke Iasiello and Andre Duval finished 1st in their respective weight classes. Iasiello at 132 lbs and Duval at 150 lbs. Ben Xiao finished second at 175 lbs.
Indoor Track
Despite the indoor track team staying active by having competition over break, the team had great performances at two meets this week at The Milrose Game Trials and the Refuel With Chocolate Milk HOF invitational. At the Milrose game trials, which is a very selective meet, Ana Pettinelli won the mile for the second year in a row. It was a tight end to the race; but Ana was able to come through after passing into first in the final 200 meters of the race. Junior Alice Nicassio had a big race in the 55m, and Nate Lynch and Jack Sheridan had strong races and PR’s in the mile. In the next meet, the girls SMR relay of Leia Patel, Alice Nicassio, Sydney Laboy and Pettinelli showed off not only winning the relay but getting the meet record. The track team’s next two meets are this Friday at Steve Brobert Invitational and on Sunday at the League Championship, both at the Armory.
Squash
The squash team had a tough match this past Friday at Lifetime in Harrison against a very competitive Rye team. The Raiders got swept 7-0. The squash team is back for a match this Wednesday against Bronxville at Pyramid Squash in Tuckahoe.
Bowling
The bowling team had a clean 7-0 sweep this week against Harrison. Kyle Horner, Jacob Grossman, Aaron Gans, Tim Deschamps all had strong games. The boys had a big game and a personal record of 788 in the second game.
In addition to the teams’ hard-won successes throughout the week, the winter pep rally also took place at the high school. Originally scheduled for December, there was an issue in the gym forcing the pep rally to be pushed back to this past Friday. All the teams, including the cheer, gymnastics, dance and fencing teams, showed off their incredible school spirit and team pride.
Each of the winter sports teams are ready to build off previous successes and have been working really hard. Stay tuned for more highlights about winter sports as the teams all look to have another triumphant week ahead. Scarsdale10583.com and the new Raiders Recap, covers all Scarsdale athletics!
