President-Elect Eugenie Rosenthal, Joanne Wallenstein and Rotary President Serkan CeylanScarsdale10583 is proud to announce our first community sponsor, the Rotary Club of Scarsdale.
The sponsorship will benefit both Scarsdale10583 and Rotary, by helping to underwrite Scarsdale’s only independent news source and allowing the site to highlight the people and the good work of the Rotary Club of Scarsdale.
Rotary President Elect Eugenie Rosenthal highlighted the importance of local news sources:
She said, “These days, freedom of the press is being challenged, not only by government, but by market forces–the fragmentation of online media. But studies are clear: independent, professional local news reduces polarization, increases civic engagement, holds government accountable, and contributes substantially to community cohesion.”
According to the Brookings Institute, “Local bond yields increase by 5-11 basis points in communities that lose their local newspapers because institutional lenders expect higher government inefficiency when there is no local news source to act as a watchdog or provide public oversight. This translates to an increase of $650,000 higher costs for each bond issuance.”
The Carnegie Corporation reports, losing a local news source increases polarization. It “makes people switch into national news, which means less exposure to local races and more partisan voting.”
“In the last 20 years, 2,500 local news outlets, one in five nationally, have closed.
Rosenthal said, "Since the shuttering of the Scarsdale Inquirer, Scarsdale10583.com has become Scarsdale’s only locally-based, weekly independent journalism. Every week, since 2009, Scarsdale10583.com has produced a weekly edition of local news, covering Village government and schools, local issues, obituaries, youth sports updates, interviews with people of interest, and featuring a weekly calendar of events that lets you know where to be and when. There is a sense of belonging that comes from knowing local news.”
In the coming year, Scarsdale10583 will highlight the local and global charitable work of the Rotary Club of Scarsdale, publicize their events, build awareness of the organization’s local efforts and promote membership.
