Alexandra Lapierre, Author of Belle Greene at Scarsdale Library

LapierreInternationally best-selling author Alexandra Lapierre will visit Scarsdale Adult School to converse with our students about her book BELLE GREENE which is soon to be a television series.

BELLE GREENE tells the remarkable true story of Belle da Costa Greene. Belle is one of the most prominent and respected librarians in American history, known for her curation and collection of rare books and manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Yet Belle hid a criminal secret. She was a Black woman passing as white in a violently racist America at the turn of the 20th century.

“This novelization of [Belle da Costa Greene’s] luxuriant, if fraught, career—Edith Wharton’s Gilded Age meets W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Talented Tenth—captivates throughout.” —Oprah Daily

Flamboyant, brilliant, stunningly beautiful, Belle was a sensation to both fashionable society and the male-dominated art world. It is this brilliant essence that Lapierre brings to life. Through her years of research and interviews (an inevitable challenge since Belle destroyed all her personal papers to harbor her secret) Lapierre pays a stunning tribute to a woman whose accomplishments, relationships, and singularity were as complex and fascinating as the collections she helped curate.

SPCA Westchester Pet Adoption Van at the Scarsdale Library

Looking for a new furry companion? The SPCA Westchester will be at the Scarsdale Public Library on Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM with their mobile adoption van. Stop by the week before to view the gallery of adoptable pets at the SPCA, some of whom you may get to meet at the event!

Interested in a cat companion? Visit our Kitty Party room at the event to meet and read to an adoptable cat!
Not looking to adopt but still want to support animals in need? Join library staff and volunteers for a fun crafting session where we'll be making toys, blankets, and beds for the dogs and cats of the SPCA. There will also be a button making station from our makerspace. Bring in a small photo of your pet and make a button to take home! (Buttons are 1 inch, so printed photos should have an image of your pet that can fit within that size.)
You can also drop off any unwanted towels, blankets, or flat sheets for the shelter pets! Dogs and cats will be available for same-day adoptions.

Historic Homes Tour: Bronxville in the Roaring Twenties

Histoury is a tour company passionate about bringing history to life with engaging storytelling and expert insights. Each tour is designed to provide a deep dive into cultural, social and architectural significance of landmarks. Visit historic home interiors on our chartered bus tour, and see and learn about many more and their histories along the way!

The 1920s in Bronxville was a period of dramatic growth. The Bronx River Parkway was completed in 1925, and estates and farms were transformed into neighborhoods with hundreds of homes. The Tudor and Mediterranean Revival styles characterized the decade's homes in lower Westchester, and many well-designed examples still grace Bronxville a hundred years later. Join us to tour a great collection of these historic homes!

This is a one-time-only event, space is limited.

The bus start/stop location will be in the Bronxville area, specific location details will be provided via email prior to the tour.
