Denim Day in Scarsdale (All day)

On Wednesday April 17, 2024, SFCS and the Scarsdale Safe Coalition: Children, Families and Community encourages you to Wear Jeans With Purpose. Although Denim Day will be acknowledged internationally on April 24, 2024, we will acknowledge Denim Day in Scarsdale on April 17th because of the Scarsdale Spring Recess.

Denim Day has become a symbol of protest opposing erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. In this rape prevention education campaign, we ask community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protesting the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it.

SFCS and the Safe Coalition asks that you take a picture(s) of yourself wearing jeans with your family, friends and of course colleagues. Please post these pictures to your social media sites with #denimday and tag the Safe Coalition’s Facebook page. SFCS has stickers that say “Ask Me About Denim Day” so that others will understand why you are wearing denim. Stickers are available at the office. I hope that you will support the agency’s efforts to raise awareness and bring an end to sexual assault.
