Honing their expert tree planting skills, staff from Scarsdale's Public Works and Parks/Rec departments attended a tree planting symposium at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) on April 15th. NYBG staff demonstrated state of the art planting techniques that help give new trees the best possible start to be healthy and thrive. These techniques include planting trees at the proper depth and adding a shallow circle of mulch around the planted tree to provide protection from mowers and weed whackers – but never piling mulch against the trunk because it harms and can eventually kill the tree. The exchange of knowledge and practical experience among the participants provided a wealth of helpful information.
Caring for Scarsdale's trees is more important than ever. Over 1,000 trees are cut down in Scarsdale each year while only a small fraction are replaced. One of the Village staff's important responsibilities is street tree planting, which residents can request – at no charge – by contacting the Department of Public Works at 914-722-1150.
