Scarsale has a new Chief of Police! Chief Steven DelBene was sworn in on his birthday, January 31, 2025, to fill the shoes of Chief Andrew Matturro who retired. Car break-ins: On Jan. 24, at 2:30 a.m., a Tisdale Road resident reported observing two unknown parties, via her doorbell camera, checking car door handles. The resident said they were two males wearing hoodies. They were seen checking door handles on two parked vehicles in the resident’s driveway. One vehicle was unlocked, which was then entered by one of the males. The male remained in the vehicle briefly, but no items were taken. The male then left the location on foot. The resident said she observed a white vehicle with NY plates drive by her house shortly after the incident. She suspected the vehicle was associated with the suspects. Patrol canvassed the area with negative results.
Identity theft and fraud
On Jan. 23, a Swarthmore Road resident discovered someone cashed a previously-cashed fraudulent check from 2021 against his account again on Dec. 16, 2024.
A Bradford Road woman reported receiving a phishing email Jan. 23. She deleted it.
On Jan. 25, a Herkimer Road resident reported that someone with a Colorado address opened a fraudulent Direct TV account in her name.
Help
Police performed a welfare check on a Lyons Road resident Jan. 23.
On Jan. 26, a Lee Road woman said she encountered an elderly man who could not speak English and who needed assistance finding his son's residence. Police made contact with the son, who came and picked up his father.
Homeless
Police asked a homeless man to vacate a doorway on Harwood Court Jan. 21. The man declined services.
Suspicious
Two men rang a Boulevard door and asked if the homeowner spoke Russian Jan. 25. The homeowner declined to answer and shut the door.
Death
A 90-year-old Madison Road woman died at home Jan. 21.
Cars and roadways
Police asked the owner of a parked car, blocking a Cohawney Road driveway, to move it Jan. 20.
Police helped call a tow for a disabled car on Post Road Jan. 20.
Police advised Verizon about a low-hanging wire on Dolma Road Jan. 21.
Police asked highway workers to remove some small bundles of sticks left by the curb on Paddington Road Jan. 21.
Police encountered a parked car with scofflaw status for unpaid parking tickets on Scarsdale Avenue Jan. 23. Police towed the car to the impound lot.
Police assisted Westchester County police with a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle on the Hutchinson River Parkway Jan. 23.
Police advised Verizon about a low-hanging wire on Weaver Street Jan. 26.
Three car accidents were officially reported in the Village this week.
Lost and found
A Village employee found an iPad on Post Rd. and gave it to police for safekeeping Jan. 22.
Village code
A noisy generator was left running overnight on Burgess Rd Jan. 23. Police issued a summons.
Police issued a summons to the owner of an illegally-posted sign on Burgess Road Jan. 23.
On Jan. 23, police told people who were ice skating on Audrey Hochberg pond that skating was prohibited.
A driver told police he lost his front license plate while driving home Jan. 23.
A Crane Road resident complained of a noisy bouncing ball Jan. 26. Police spoke with the neighbor in question and a kid in the house agreed to stop bouncing his ball.
Firefighters
On Jan. 20, firefighters put a defective elevator at the Scarsdale train station out of service.
On Jan. 22, firefighters were dispatched to a Griffen Avenue house for an odor of gas with a hissing sound. Upon arrival, personnel noticed an odor and heard the sound of leaking gas as they approached the dwelling. After investigation, a high-pressure leak was discovered prior to the service valve at the meter riser. Con Edison was requested. Fire personnel evacuated the dwelling, extinguished a fire in the fireplace, located and unburied the curb valve and checked the dwelling for measurable natural gas. 900 ppm was detected in the dwelling. Con Edison arrived and determined the severity of the leak required the curb valve to be shut. Firefighters and Con Edison personnel worked to remove water, ice, and
frozen dirt from the curb valve after which it was able to be shut. The flow of natural gas subsided, and the home was ventilated.
