Firefighters
On March 11, firefighters were dispatched to a Chesterfield Road house for an inside odor investigation. During investigation, crews determined that the odor was originating from a dry shower trap on the first floor. Crews confirmed a strong odor in the sewer system at the street level. Firefighters ran the shower to fill the trap with water. They advised the resident to ensure all plumbing appliances are used at least every one to two weeks. The chemical odor within the sewer system was determined to be due to styrene involved in the Cured-In-Place-Pipe (CIPP) sewer replacement project within the village.
On March 11, firefighters were dispatched to a car fire on the Hutchinson River Parkway, near Weaver Street. Upon arrival, crews encountered a disabled vehicle with no visible smoke or fire. During investigation, firefighters determined that the antifreeze had leaked onto the engine block causing a steam release that was interpreted by the driver as smoke. Granular absorbent was applied to the leaking antifreeze. The scene was turned over to Westchester County Police.
Firefighters assisted at a car accident on Weaver Street March 11.
On March 12, a car was reportedly leaking gasoline on Rochambeau Rd. During investigation, crews encountered a white Toyota RAV4 with a slow gasoline leak. On March 15, firefighters were dispatched to Wayside Lane because of an inside odor of gas. On arrival, units investigated and detected an odor of exhaust consistent with an oil heating unit. Firefighters checked the basement, where the heating unit was located, and detected 10 PPM carbon monoxide. The leak was traced to the exhaust vent pipe on the heating unit. Firefighters shut down the oil heating unit and ventilated the structure. The resident was advised of the defective vent pipe and told to have a plumber or HVAC technician service the system.
On March 15, on Bradley Rd., firefighters detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide in a house. Firefighters detected 200 PPM of carbon monoxide inside the garage and 170 PPM above the garage in a new addition. Con Edison was dispatched to the scene. Firefighters helped locate the source of the leak to the chimney, where the heating unit and hot water heater exhausted from the older part of the structure. They determined this was then leaking into the garage and into the new living space built above the garage. Firefighters advised the resident to contact an HVAC technician to inspect the heating unit and exhaust pipe for leaks in the chimney.
On March 16, firefighters responded to a CO investigation in an attached two-story commercial structure. On arrival, firefighters made entry into the structure and witnessed a light haze and an odor associated with a boiler malfunction. Firefighters shut down the boiler. In the boiler room, there were upwards of 200 PPM of CO. Firefighters began ventilating the structure and checking other commercial occupancies for CO readings. Firefighters ventilated the entire building to achieve safe levels. The building manager was contacted and responded. He was advised to have the heating unit serviced.
