Police Report: Bronx Man Arrested While Trying to Cash Counterfeit Checks, Pedestrian Hit, Firefighters Battle Freezing Conditions to Extinguish Walworth Ave. House Fire

House Fire: The Scarsdale Fire Department received a report of smoke inside a Walworth Avenue house Saturday night, Dec. 21, at 10:20 pm. Upon arrival, firefighters observed visible exterior smoke and an active fire inside the basement. Firefighters stretched the initial attack hose line through a rear door in order to suppress the fire. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heavy fire in the basement, with smoke and fire extending to the first floor. Scarsdale career firefighters were assisted at the scene by Scarsdale volunteer firefighters and mutual aid units from Fairview, Greenville and Hartsdale fire departments. White Plains and Eastchester fire departments responded to cover the remainder of the Village while the fire was ongoing. The main body of fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, and firefighters remained on scene for several hours checking for extension. Scarsdale and Westchester County fire investigation units determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Scarsdale Police, Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Scarsdale Department of Public Works units assisted. All occupants of the house had self-evacuated, and there were no reported injuries. Salt had to be applied to the driveway and roadway because icing conditions were forming during extinguishment efforts.
Bank fraud arrest
On Dec. 18, an employee of Webster Bank called police and reported that a man was inside the bank attempting to fraudulently cash three counterfeit checks amounting to $788.79, $619.00 and $988.79. Police arrived at the scene, and investigation determined that the suspect – Mamady Danfakha, 22, of the Bronx – had attempted to cash a check under false pretense and a false name and a false ID. Police arrested Danfakha and charged him with second-degree criminal impersonation, second-degree grand larceny and three counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument. In addition to the three counterfeit checks, police collected the following as evidence: a deposit slip and previously stolen checks and a deposit slip amounting to $24,138.57. In addition, marijuana was found in Danfakha’s possession. It was confiscated for destruction. Following his arrest, Danfakha was arraigned at Scarsdale Village Justice Court. Unable to post bail of $2,000 cash, he was remanded to Westchester County Jail pending his court date.
Stolen delivery
On Dec. 18, a Stratton Road caller reported someone tampered with mail from his mailbox, open an Amazon delivery box and stole products from the delivery. The products were a bottle of Nivea lotion and reflective tape.
Counterfeit money
On Dec. 16, a Spencer Place business reported it received a counterfeit $50 bill over the weekend. Bank personnel identified the bill as counterfeit and confiscated it when the business owner attempted to deposit it.
Arrest on warrant
On Dec. 19, Anthony T. Shell, 54, of Mount Vernon, was informed by Village Court that there was an active warrant for his arrest. Shell went to headquarters and surrendered himself for arrest processing. He was released on his own recognizance and was issued an appearance ticket for Village Court on Jan. 8.
Homeless person
A homeless man walked into headquarters and asked to use the restroom Dec. 17. Police allowed the man to use the restroom and drove him to a homeless shelter in White Plains as a courtesy.
Parked cars
On Dec. 16, a Lee Road resident complained about construction vehicles parked on a neighbor’s construction site. Police forwarded the complaint to the building department.
Eastchester police towed three cars from Gray Rock Road so that the Scarsdale Water Department could perform emergency work Dec. 20.
Cold
An elderly Saxon Woods Road resident called police to say that she was not getting enough heat in her apartment Dec. 19. Police notified staff in the facility where the woman lives, and staff said they would send someone to check on her and the heat.
Help
On Dec.20, police checked the welfare of two women on Montrose Road who were scheduled to arrive the previous night and did not contact a person to confirm their arrival. The women were fine.
Pedestrian struck
On Dec. 19, at 6:25 p.m., a New Jersey driver struck a 64-year-old male pedestrian, of Scarsdale, at Fenimore and Brewster roads while the pedestrian was crossing in the marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was lying on the ground when emergency workers arrived. Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. Firefighters and police assisted at the scene. The driver was issued a summons for failing to yield to a pedestrian’s right of way in a crosswalk.
Cars and roadways
On Dec. 17, a tree fell on Birchall Drive, knocking down a power line. Con Edison and highway department workers responded to correct the problem while police closed the street to traffic.
The highway department was called to remove a fallen tree from Bypass and branches from School Lane and Post, Richbell and Spier roads Dec. 17.
Con Edison was notified about a fallen branch and wires on Fountain Terrace and fallen wires on Ogden Road Dec. 17.
Police notified the highway department about three potholes on Wayside Lane Dec. 17.
Patrol removed a large tree limb from Ogden Road and tree debris from Bypass Dec. 17.
Con Edison was notified about burning wires on Donellan Road Dec. 17.
Police removed a fallen branch from Heathcote Road Dec. 17.
Police notified Verizon about fallen wires on Canterbury Road Dec. 17 and Sage Terrace and Paddington Road Dec. 18.
Police removed branches from Post and Crane roads Dec. 18.
The highway department was notified about a fallen tree on Taunton Road Dec. 18.
A New York City driver reported his 2015 Honda was struck by a falling branch on Post Road Dec. 18. The impact cracked the driver’s windshield and damaged the hood. The engineering department the branch did not fall from a Village-owned tree.
A driver struck a large pothole on Weaver Street and sustained two flat tires Dec. 19. The highway department was notified about the pothole, for repair.
Police removed a fallen communication wire from Black Birch Lane Dec. 20. Verizon was notified.
Sixteen car accidents were reported in the Village this week.
Civil matter
On Dec. 17, a building superintendent alleged a resident was removing safety stickers from doors and using cardboard to prop open doors in the building. The super, however, did not have any evidence to support the accusation. Police attempted to talk to the resident in question, but that person was not available.
A Brite Avenue resident reported an oil truck drove over curbing and made tire marks on her lawn Dec. 17.
Dog
Police picked up a loose dog at Crossway and Fayette Road Dec. 22. After attempts to locate the owner were unsuccessful, New Rochelle Humane Society picked up the dog. Shortly thereafter, the owner came to headquarters to report the dog missing. Police informed her how to pick it up from NRHS. The owner was issued a summons for having a dog at large.
Lost and found
On Dec. 16, a passerby found a wallet outside Starbucks on East Parkway. Police located the owner and returned the wallet after verifying the owner’s identity.
A Greenacres resident found a phone on the train and brought it to police Dec. 16. Police vouchered it for safekeeping.
A woman reported losing a bag containing two NYS license plates while in a Chase Road restaurant Dec. 17.
On Dec. 18, a passerby found a set of Apple “Airpods” wireless headphones, and brought them to headquarters.
On Dec. 19, a Bronx man lost his phone and tracked it to a location near the Heathcote Gulf gas station on Heathcote Road. There, a man said he found the phone earlier that day while performing scrap metal removal services in the Bronx and planned to try to locate the owner and return the phone after work that evening. Police stood by while the phone was successfully returned to its owner.
Firefighters
According to Fire Chief James Seymour, firefighters responded to 29 incidents this week, including the reported structure fire on Walworth Avenue. Details of other incidents are as follows.
On Dec. 17, firefighters responded to a scene of fallen power lines and a burning tree on Birchall Drive. Primary and secondary power lines were compromised, and multiple utility poles were broken. Firefighters stabilized the scene until Con Edison arrived.
On Dec. 17, carbon monoxide was detected in a Morris Lane house due to a problem with a gas boiler system. Con Edison was called, and firefighters assisted with ventilating the house.
On Dec. 17, fallen wires were burning on Donellan Road, and a resident reported that her house service had been taken out. Firefighters saw that the house service was still connected by one power leg. Firefighters shut down all double pole breakers in the house and relocated the central alarm power to another outlet to restore power to the alarm. Low-hanging wires were taped off, and Con Edison was called.
On Dec. 22, a hissing sound was coming from a suspected gas line at a Stonehouse Road house, following the resident hitting the line while drilling a hole in the wall. Firefighters shut gas to the house and stood by for Con Edison. Upon opening the wall to check for trapped gas, firefighters noticed that a copper pipe inside the wall was running an A/C condenser located outside the house. This pipe was hit and most likely bled out Freon. Firefighters were released from the scene after Con Edison’s arrival.

DWI Arrest on Post Road: Driver Asleep with Engine Running, Burglary on Dolma Road

DWI: On Dec. 9, at 5:24 a.m., Daniel Santiago Perez, 31, of Medford, NY was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .08 of one percent, and a stopping/standing/parking violation on a highway. Perez’s 2019 Honda was observed parked in a lane of Post Road with the engine running and Perez sleeping inside. Perez was covered in what appeared to be vomit. Police attempted to wake Perez by knocking on the window. That was unsuccessful, so police opened the passenger side door and turned off the ignition. After several more attempts, police succeeded in waking up Perez. He told police he had consumed two beers at a place where he works as security. He claimed he left his place of employment at 3 a.m. Police noticed an odor of alcohol on Perez’s breath, slurred speech and glassy eyes. He was asked to perform field sobriety tests, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI. Perez was booked, processed and released on his own recognizance with an appearance ticket for Scarsdale Village Justice Court.
Burglary
On Dec. 14, an automatic burglar alarm alerted police to a burglary in a Dolma Road house at 5:38 p.m., Dec. 14. A rear glass door was found to be broken, and a master bedroom closet was ransacked. The homeowner returned and confirmed several watches had been stolen. Detectives are following up.
Stolen package
On Dec. 10, a delivered package was stolen from a Carthage Road house. It contained a $487.67 subwoofer and stand.
Stolen
On Dec. 13, a Paddington Road woman reported the theft of three sets of sterling silver flatware from her house. The sets were valued at $24,000 combined.
A Hazelton Place man reported a $12,000 Rolex watch and a $300 Prada makeup bag were stolen from his house in the past.
ID theft
On Dec. 13, a Secor Road resident reported someone used his personal information to fraudulently attempt to obtain a credit card.
On Dec. 13, a Fairview Road woman reported her personal information was used to fraudulently withdraw $12,844.73 in funds from her bank account.

A 97-year-old Harvest Drive woman passed away at home Dec. 15.
Harassment
A Richbell Close employer reported an ex-employee has contacted him numerous times threatening to file a lawsuit or criminal charges unless additional unemployment payments are made. The ex-employee accused the Richbell Close employer of “stealing” his unemployment benefits. Police attempted to contact the ex-employee but were unable to reach him.
Attempted fraud
On Dec. 10, a Bradford Road resident reported an unknown individual attempted to scam the resident into revealing personal information and sending a large sum of money via a wire transfer. The resident did not fall for the scam and reported the matter to police.
Assistance
Police accompanied an individual to assist him retrieve belongings from a Sheldrake Road house Dec. 9.
On Dec. 10, police contacted a women’s shelter for a homeless woman who was found inside Christie Place garage. Police provided her with courtesy transportation.
On Dec. 13, police de-escalated a road rage incident involving two drivers who allegedly “almost collided” on Mamaroneck Road.
Police notified MTA police about a report of a bag left near a newspaper box on the MTA train station platform at the Scarsdale station Dec. 15.
Gun
A person brought a WW2-era Japanese pistol and approximately 100 rounds of ammunition to headquarters to give to police for destruction Dec. 15. The man found the gun and ammunition in his father-in-law’s former house during a clean out.
Credit card
A customer left a credit card in a Scarsdale Avenue store Dec. 15. Police contacted the owner who picked up his card.
Scofflaw
On Dec. 11, police detected a car with scofflaw status parked on Garth Road. The driver – a 48-year-old Bronx woman – owed the Village $775 in unpaid parking tickets. The driver was advised of the matter and was also advised that her registration had been suspended due to an insurance lapse. The driver was advised she could not drive the car due to the suspended registration, but she proceeded to drive the car on Garth Road nevertheless. Police managed to stop her on Garth Road near Freightway. She was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. The car’s plates were removed, and the car was towed to the driver’s house in the Bronx. She was told to take care of the suspensions at the DMV and to pay outstanding fines at Village Hall.
Pedestrians hit
A driver reported hitting a woman with his car at the corner of Garth and Freightway roads Dec. 13.
At 10 p.m., a Toyota grazed a man on Garth Road. He told police he was not injured and refused medical attention. The man has just crossed the street and was about to open his car door, when the Toyota’s mirror struck the man’s back as the Toyota drove by. The driver stopped, and a call was placed to police. Police went over all option with both parties, and they decided they did not want to file an accident report.
Cars and roadways
On Dec. 10, police called a tow truck for a driver who locked herself out of her car.
A car was idling on Herkimer Road, with the driver sleeping inside at 11:30 p.m. The driver said he was on his way to Boston and had pulled over to rest.
Highway workers were called to address snow-laden bamboo trees that had bent into the road Dec. 11.
Police notified Verizon about low-hanging wires on Mamaroneck Road Dec. 11.
Highway workers were notified about an uneven sidewalk on Normandy Lane Dec. 12.
Police placed a temporary stop sign at the exit ramp of the Hutchinson River Parkway at Weaver Street and Hutchinson Avenue due to the streetlight being out due to a power failure Dec. 13.
Police helped a pedestrian cross Weaver Street and Heathcote Road Dec. 14.
Police called a tow for a disabled car on Weaver Street Dec. 14.
Six car accidents were reported in the village this week.
Civil matter
On Dec. 12, a former Fox Meadow Road resident reported several items from his former house are unaccounted for. On Dec. 12, the same former Fox Meadow Road man reported unfamiliar activity on his credit card. The charges were possibly made by a family member.
Dogs
A concerned caller reported that a small dog was left out in the rain without adequate shelter on steps of a Sprague Road house Dec. 10. Police spoke to the owner who brought the dog inside the house.
A Carman Road woman was concerned about a loose dog sitting in the rain on her driveway Dec. 13. Police picked up the dog and returned it to its owner’s house down the street. Police let the dog into the house, secured the door and left a note for the owner.
Village code
Police issued a summons to a MacDonald Place landscaper using a gas-powered leaf blower in violation of village code Dec. 14.
Following a noise complaint, police advised a party host at the Fox Meadow Tennis Club that he needed to lower the noise level Dec. 14. The host said he would comply.
Firefighters
According to Fire Captain James Seymour, firefighters responded to 27 incidents this week. Seymour shared details of the following incidents.
On Dec. 9, an outdoor electrical fixture was found to be smoking in the rain on Mamaroneck Road. Firefighters shut the circuit at the breaker panel and advised the homeowner to call an electrician.
On Dec. 10, firefighters shut down an oil burner in a Carman Road house following a puff back. They set up ventilation through fans into order to clear smoke and carbon monoxide from the air. They advised the resident to call for service.
On Dec. 11, a chemical burning odor was reported in a Sheldrake Road house. Firefighters traced the odor to a burnt out light bulb. They disconnected the bulb and the fixture.
Firefighters stood by for Con Edison at the site of an outdoor gas leak at Carthage Road and Crossway Dec. 14. They assisted firefighters check area houses for gas infiltration.
Firefighters provided mutual aid to Hartsdale Fire Department for a reported structure fire on Central Avenue Dec. 15.

Police Report: Burglaries and Car Break-ins over Holiday Weekend

Burglaries: A burglar alarm alerted police to a burglary attempt at a Franklin Road house at 5:38 p.m., Nov. 29. Police found the door kicked in. Nothing was determined to have been stolen. Detectives are investigating.
A burglar alarm alerted police to a burglary in a Cushman Road house at 6: 37 p.m., Nov. 29. The door was kicked in, and the homeowner reported several pieces of jewelry, worth more than $2,000 combined, were stolen. Detectives are investigating.
Car break-ins
On Dec. 1, several residents in the village reported larcenies and attempted larcenies from unlocked parked cars overnight Nov. 30. The incidents occurred on Dobbs Terrace, Walworth Avenue, Greenacres Avenue and Ridgecrest North. Stolen items included rolls of quarters, loose change, a $30 coat, cologne, an insurance card and designer sunglasses. No damages were reported. One Greenacres Avenue resident had video surveillance footage of two men walking around on his property and forwarded it to detectives for investigation.
Stolen bike
A girl stated her $75 white mountain bicycle was stolen from the Brewster Road side of the high school Nov. 26. It had been chained to a fence on Nov. 18 and was last seen there on Nov. 22. Police checked with school officials, and they said it was not their policy to remove bikes from school grounds.

Domestic matter
A Fox Meadow man reported approximately $400,000 worth of high-value jewelry and silverware was missing from his house. He is currently in the process of divorce and has not lived in the house since September 2018. His ex-wife stated she did not know where the items were.
Housemate dispute
Two tenants who rent rooms in a Post Road house were arguing over possible noise Nov. 28. One of the tenants said he would sleep in a hotel that night to avoid trouble. Police stayed on scene while the tenant gathered his belongings.
On Nov. 30, a Post Road landlord reported a dispute between two tenants. The nature of the dispute involved the volume of a television. After speaking with both tenants, they determined that co-habitation was not a good idea. Police advised the landlord about eviction procedures.
Harassment
On Nov. 25, a 23-year-old woman reported harassment from some social media comments posted on her Facebook account by an acquaintance.
A Roosevelt Place man reported his son was being followed by a vehicle for over 15 minutes around 11 p.m., Nov. 28. Police spoke with the driver of the vehicle. The driver said he had engaged in following the son because the son was ”suspicious.” When pressed for details about the alleged “suspicious” behavior, the driver was unable to elaborate or provide any specific reasons. Patrol advised both parties to go their separate ways.
Disorderly conduct
An intoxicated man got into an argument with a 7-Eleven employee while trying to buy cigarettes from the Scarsdale Avenue store at 3:45 a.m., Nov. 27. Police spoke with the man and he was cooperative with police orders. No crime was committed.
Door
After a woman complained on Dec. 1 that she was stuck inside the lobby vestibule of Chase Bank on Palmer Avenue, police determined that the release bar on the door had to be pressed hard in order to get the door to open. Police informed bank employees for adjustment.
Arrest on warrant
On Nov. 25, police picked up Alejandro Palma, 25, of White Plains, from White Plains police and arrested him in execution of an active arrest warrant issued out of Scarsdale on April 4, 2018, for failure to appear in court. Palma was released on his own recognizance with an appearance ticket for Village Justice Court, returnable Nov. 27.
Pedestrian hit
On Nov. 25, at 12:53 p.m., a Taunton Road woman was hit by a gray Honda at Chase Road and Harwood Court. No injuries were reported.
Cars and roadways
On Nov. 25, police observed a car parked out of parking space lines on Spencer Place and issued a summons.
Police helped a woman cross Weaver Street Nov. 25.
Police helped a woman rectify a difficulty in operating her Mercedes Benz SUV in the parking lot of Village Hall Nov. 25.
Police directed traffic around a disabled car on Heathcote Road until a tow arrived Nov. 25.
Police advised the foreman of a roadway work zone on Fox Meadow Road that the situation was unsafe because only one flagger was present to direct traffic flow on a single open lane Nov. 26. The foreman said he would correct the matter immediately.
Police advised the water department about a water main break on Grand Park Avenue Nov. 26.
Police called a tow for a car with two flat tires at Weaver Street and Crossway Nov. 26. In the meantime, patrol directed traffic around the disabled car.
Police called a tow for a car that ran out of gas on Heathcote Road Nov. 28.
Patrol moved a low-hanging phone wire out of the way of traffic over Stratton Road and Rural Drive and notified Verizon Nov. 28.
Police advised a Nelson Road resident that a broken branch dangling over the roadway posed a danger Nov. 28. The resident said the branch was scheduled to be removed by a private contractor. Police advised the resident to expedite the job.
A stop sign fell over on Rodney Road due to a deteriorated base Nov. 29. Police placed a temporary stop sign at the intersection and alerted the highway department for replacement.
A construction crew on Griffen Avenue was ordered to stop work until sufficient flagmen could be put in place Nov. 30.
Police asked the owner of a Toyota parked haphazardly on Saxon Woods Road to move the car, and the owner complied Nov. 30.
Dogs
Police reunited a loose dog found at Mamaroneck and Garden roads with its owner Nov. 27.
A Webster Road woman reported that her three dogs escaped from her yard Nov. 28. Police entered descriptions of the dogs in the lost dog book.
Lost and found
On Nov. 29, a woman walked into headquarters and reported losing her driver’s license somewhere in the village.
On Nov. 29, an Oak Lane man reported losing his license plates in Massachusetts due to an auto accident.
A passerby found a United States Uniformed Services ID Card and Privilege Card by the train station on Depot Place and gave them to police Nov. 30. Police vouchered the property for safekeeping.
Eastchester fire
Police assisted with the evacuation of occupants inside a Grand Boulevard structure in which there was an active fire at 5:17 a.m., Dec. 1.
Firefighters
According to Fire Chief James Seymour, firefighters responded to 28 incidents during the reporting period.
On Nov. 25, firefighters ventilated a Hampton Road house in order to reduce carbon monoxide levels. The CO accumulation had been caused by a contractor using a gas-powered saw in the basement.
Firefighters assisted with a structure fire on Healy Avenue in Hartsdale Nov. 28.
A cat was stuck on a neighbor’s roof on Hamilton Road for two days before firefighters used an aerial ladder to collect the cat and bring it down in a carrier Nov. 29. It was returned to its owner unharmed.
On Nov. 30, firefighters residents of a Windsor Lane house because of elevated levels of carbon monoxide. Investigation determined the source was back-feed from burned-out, underground electrical service. Firefighters ventilated the house and stood by for Con Edison. Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps was called to evaluate all occupants.
On Dec. 1, firefighters assisted with a two-car accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway.

Police Report: Resident Charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Packages, Money, Bicycles Stolen

Arrested: On Dec. 8, police responded to a report that someone allegedly got punched in the head at a Sheldrake Road residence. As a result of investigation, police arrested Paul I. Dantzig, 72, of Scarsdale, and charged him with endangering the welfare of a child. According to police, Dantzig allowed juveniles to engage in conduct injurious to their health and welfare. Dantzig is accused of failing to supervise and take corrective action that resulted in endangering the health of one such juvenile. Following police intervention, all juveniles were safely escorted from the house and relocated elsewhere. Dantzig was released on his own recognizance with a return date set for Village Justice Court.
Stolen
Packages and mail were stolen from a Gatehouse Road mailbox overnight Nov. 30.
A Chappaqua woman reported that money was removed from her purse while she was out of her exam room for a brief period of time at the medical center on Heathcote Road Dec. 4. Police are following up.
Three unlocked mountain bicycles, worth approximately $2,500, were reported stolen from a Fox Meadow Road property Dec. 6.
Car break-ins
On Dec. 2, a Brewster Road resident reported someone entered her parked, unlocked car and rummaged through the interior. Nothing was reported stolen.
On Dec. 2, a Walworth Avenue woman reported someone entered her parked car overnight and stole a camping knife and possibly a pair of shoes.
Criminal mischief
A caller surmised that an unknown person apparently attempted to enter his parked car on Church Lane, causing significant damage to the lock cylinder, Dec. 1.
Attempted bank fraud
On Dec. 3, a man presented a fake driver’s license and credit card to a Chase Bank teller in an attempt to withdraw funds from another person’s account. The man left the bank after he was unable to provide a pin number, and the teller alerted police.

An 100-year-old Parkfield Road woman died at home Dec. 4.

On Dec. 3, a Gatehouse Road resident reported mail being removed from his mailbox.

On Dec. 3, police escorted a contractor out of a Spencer Place worksite because the contractor did not possess proper liability insurance.

Pedestrian hit
On Dec. 5, a Rocky Hollow Drive pedestrian was struck by a car backing out of a Meadow Road driveway. Only minor injuries were reported.
Cars and roadways
Police issued summonses to two cars parked in front of a Walworth Avenue driveway Dec. 3 and to a delivery truck obstructing traffic on East Parkway Dec. 4.
Caution tape was applied to fallen wires on Fox Meadow Road Dec. 4.
Police called a tow for a car stuck in the mud on Bypass Dec. 4.
Police notified the highway department about a dead animal that needed to be removed from Quaker Center Dec. 6.
Eight car accidents were reported in the village this week.
Lost and found
Village Hall personnel reported that a person left a wallet behind at Village Hall Dec. 2. The owner of the wallet responded to headquarters to pick up the wallet.
A handbag was found on Spencer Place Dec. 4. Police held the handbag for safekeeping until the owner picked it up.
On Dec. 7, a passenger left a purse inside a taxi, and the driver brought it to headquarters. Police notified the owner, who picked it up from headquarters.
Noise
Neighbors complained about a dog barking on Cooper Road for several hours Dec. 3. Police issued the owner a summons.
Firefighters
According to Fire Chief James Seymour, firefighters responded to 19 incidents during the reporting period. Seymour shared the following details below.
On Dec. 2, a manhole cover blew off its base on Popham Road. Power went out on Harwood Court. Firefighters checked nearby structures for related issues and found no signs of smoke or heat. Popham Road was closed between Chase Road and Scarsdale Ave. Firefighters stood by for Con Edison.
On Dec. 4, a burnt-out light bulb was causing an odor in a Mercer Court house. Firefighters removed the bulb.
A hot water pipe was leaking into a Lincoln Road light fixture Dec. 7.
On Dec. 8, firefighters traced an odor in a Sprague Road basement to an open venting cap on a sewer trap. Firefighters advised the homeowner to call a plumber to replace the cap.

Police Report: Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck by Car at Fort Hill and Underhill Roads

Accident fatality: On Friday, Nov. 22, at 6:10 p.m., Greenburgh Police responded to Fort Hill Road just south of the intersection with Underhill Road, in Edgemont, to investigate a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Arriving police and EMS personnel came upon a 67-year-old female resident of Edgemont lying in the roadway. She had suffered injuries sustained from an accident with a 2014 Acura MDX that had turned onto Fort Hill Road from Underhill Road while traveling south. The operator of the MDX, a 49-year-old woman, of Edgemont, stopped and called 911. There were two other passengers in her vehicle, and none of the occupants of the vehicle were injured. The injured pedestrian was transported to Westchester Medical Center. She was admitted to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and passed away later that evening. An accident investigation is ongoing by Greenburgh PD detectives and traffic personnel. Anyone with information is asked to please contact the GPD Detective Division at 914-989-1725.
Felony arrest
On Nov. 20, Emily McGovern, 50, of Poughkeepsie, was arrested on a felony charge of third-degree grand larceny. McGovern is accused of stealing more than $41,500 in bank account funds from a 77-year-old relative through the fraudulent use of debit and credit cards. She was released on her own recognizance and ordered to appear in court on a future date. A temporary order of protection was issued in favor of the defendant who suffered a loss of funds.
DWI
On Nov. 24, Orlando Villa Vargas, 20, of Port Chester, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), aggravated DWI with a blood alcohol level of .18 or more with no priors, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway. Police noticed Vargas’s 2004 Hummer stopped at the intersection of Mamaroneck Road and Palmer Avenue, with Vargas asleep at the wheel. Further investigation revealed that Vargas was intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested.
Dead on arrival
A 93-year-old Oak Lane woman died at home Nov. 23.
Scam
On Nov. 19, a Ridgedale Road woman reported that she had been scammed out of $1,010.48 after receiving a call from someone alleging to be a Con Edison employee. The caller alleged that the woman’s account was past due and instructed the woman to purchase a Moneypak in the amount of $499.69 in order to pay the bill. After purchasing the Moneypak and remitting it to the caller, the woman received a second call from the caller indicating that additional money was owed. After purchasing and remitting a second Moneypak, the woman then received a third call demanding more money. At that point, the woman realized the requests for payment were a scam, and she notified police.
Stolen
A boy’s silver mountain bike was stolen from the parking lot behind Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Boulevard Nov. 21. According to the boy’s mother, the boy was attending a religious class when the bike was stolen.
Shoplifting
The Popham Road CVS store manager called police to report that a known shoplifter was in the store shoplifting approximately 26 sticks of deodorant valued at $175.24 Nov. 21. The incident was recorded on surveillance video. Police are following up.
Criminal mischief
On Nov. 19, a real estate agent reported that three real estate “for sale” signs were defaced, damaged or removed from the property of a Normandy Lane house for sale over the past two months. One sign was found folded in half. One sign was removed from the property. One sign was tagged with a graffiti apparently written with a black Sharpie marker. Police said they would conduct extra ridebys of the property as a precaution.
Someone threw two rocks at a commercial building with a window facing Popham Road overnight Nov. 18. One rock shattered a window and made a hole in its screen. The other rock damaged a shutter.
Domestic matters
A Greenacres woman called police to report she was having an issue with her adult daughter over house upkeep Nov. 23. Police spoke both with both parties who agreed that they would each partake in housekeeping duties during the week.
A Fox Meadow mother said her daughter was misbehaving, and she wanted advice Nov. 23. When patrol arrived on scene, the mother clarified that she was not requesting assistance. Police provided her with contact information for family counseling resources.
Flashlight
A Huntington Road resident reported seeing a man walking on the street with a flashlight, possibly looking into cars, at 6:30 a.m., Nov. 20. Police investigated and determined the man was a taxi driver looking for house numbers in order to identify the house scheduled for a pickup.
Scofflaw
Police identified a white Mercedes-Benz with scofflaw status parked on East Parkway Nov. 20. The owner of the car returned while police were on scene, and police informed her that she owed $350 in unpaid parking tickets. She said she would rectify the matter immediately at Village Hall.
Police identified a gray 2007 Toyota Prius with scofflaw status, belonging to a Stratford Road woman, parked on Christie Place Nov. 21. The Prius had accumulated five unpaid parking tickets with a total of $650 in fines. Police towed the Prius to the department’s impound lot.
Pedestrian struck
On Nov. 22, a 15-year-old Old Orchard Road girl was struck by a 2018 Mercedes-Benz while crossing the street diagonally, against the traffic signal, at Crane Road and Woodland Place, at 3:12 p.m. The 20-yerar-old Scarsdale driver said he attempted to stop but was unsuccessful. The girl was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The driver was not issued any summonses.
Cars and roadways
On Nov. 18, the highway department was notified about an uprooted tree resulting from a car accident at Mamaroneck Road and Barker Lane. According to the 57-year-old Mamaroneck driver, the accident occurred because she suffered from a headache and struck the tree. She complained of chest pain and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
A Mohican Trail resident reported a car was honking its horn in her driveway after dark Nov. 18. The driver of the car left before police arrived.
A man sleeping in his car in the 7-Eleven parking lot on Scarsdale Avenue at 4:45 a.m., Nov. 19, told police he got tired while driving home from work and decided to stop to rest.
Police closed an open manhole cover at Rugby Lane and Cambridge Road Nov. 19.
Police helped call a tow for a motorist with a flat tire on Post Road Nov. 19.
A motorist reported that a metal roadway plate had shifted out of place on Post Road Nov. 19. Police notified the highway department for correct reinstallation.
Verizon was notified about a dangling fiber optic wire on School Lane Nov. 19.
A Stratton Road resident reported a car was stopped but running on the street in front of his house at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 20. Police spoke with the driver who said he was driving to Massachusetts, got tired and stopped to rest on a side street.
Police removed a dead cat from a traffic lane on Post Road and placed it near the curb for pickup Nov. 20.
Wires fell on a Village leaf removal truck while the truck was on a job on Fayette Road Nov. 22. The wires were knocked down by a falling tree. Police contacted Con Edison for wire removal from the vehicle. Firefighters assisted. No injuries were reported
A car sustained two flat tires on Mamaroneck Road Nov. 22. Police stood by and directed traffic around the car until it was able to be towed to a garage.
Police issued parking tickets to cars parked on the grass on Wayside Lane Nov. 23.
Con Edison was informed about low-hanging wires on Sheldrake Road Nov. 23.
Police observed a car struck a fire hydrant on Post Road, damaging it and allowing water to flow into both traffic lanes at 4:15 a.m., Nov. 24. Police then observed the car leave the scene. The water department responded and turned off the valve to stop the flow of water.
Thirteen car accidents were reported in the village during the reporting period.
Village code
After a neighbor complained of baking dog left outdoors on Springdale Avenue Nov. 21, police went the alleged house and observed a dog outside. The dog baked a few times, police informed its owner of the neighbor’s complaint. The owner brought the dog inside.
Some kids were dancing in a room above a garage on Heathcote Road and a neighbor complained of noise Nov. 22. Police spoke with the homeowner, and the homeowner instructed the kids to lower the volume of the music.
A window salesman going door-to-door on Oxford Road was informed he needed a permit to solicit in the Village Nov. 23.
On Nov. 23, police asked a Brewster Road homeowner to lower the volume of music at a child’s birthday party after a neighbor complained of noise.
Lost dog
Police reunited a lost dog and its Boulder Brook Road owner Nov. 23.
Firefighters
According to Fire Chief James Seymour, firefighters responded to 33 incidents during the reporting period. Seymour shared details of the following incidents.
On Nov. 18, firefighters were dispatched to the high school because a science teacher had left non-toxic chemicals on the hot plate, and the chemicals started smoking and emitting a foul odor. Students and staff were evacuated from the school and a Hazmat team was called in as a precaution. Custodians and firefighters ventilated affected classrooms with small fans. No abnormal readings were detected, and the school was determined to be safe. Four students complaining of headaches were evaluated by Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps in the nurse’s office. They refused further medical attention. The science wing remained closed for the day in order to allow for active ventilation.
Firefighters assisted with a rollover car accident on Mamaroneck Road Nov. 18. The driver self extricated and was evaluated by SVAC on scene. The highway department was notified about an uprooted tree resulting from the accident.
On Nov. 20, firefighters notified Con Edison about an outdoor gas odor from an excavation site on Norma Place. Firefighters were released from the scene after Con Edison workers arrived.
On Nov. 21, firefighters assisted at a two-car accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway.
On Nov. 21, firefighters assisted at a two-car accident on East Parkway involving a car that partially got stuck under a box truck.
On Nov. 23, firefighters assisted at a two-car accident on the Heathcote Bypass. Both cars ended up in the woods, and the occupants self extricated.
Smoke from a Morris Lane fireplace activated a smoke alarm in the house Nov. 24.
Firefighters arrived on scene, confirmed the fire had been extinguished and ventilated the house.
