Scarsdale High School graduate Danielle Butin engaged the audience at the Scarsdale League of Women Voters' October 22 luncheon with her moving account of founding and serving as the Executive Director of the Afya Foundation, a large scale medical supply recovery operation based in Yonkers. Ms. Butin explained how her medical background and the overwhelming needs she saw on a trip to Africa inspired her to create an organization to collect surplus medical supplies in the US and provide them to hospitals in impoverished countries that had been operating with almost no basic medical supplies. She shared stories of the horrors she has witnessed, such as a doctor sewing up a woman who's had a Cesarean with sutures made from strands taken from a gauze pad. What is the secret of her success in securing donations? She doesn't take no for an answer. Her persistence enabled has her to acquire a warehouse that originally cost $80,000 for just $3,000. Through And the secret to her success in providing assistance to victims of the earthquake in Partners in Health in Haiti Butin has been on the forefront, providing services in Haiti even before the earthquake.
Ms. Butin noted the tremendous support that Afya has received from the Westchester community, including fundraisers and assistance from adults and students in organizing and packing donations.
On Sunday, October 17, The Scarsdale Striders, gathered to participate in the American Cancer Society's, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The 17th annual event took place at Manhattanville College in Purchase. 13,200 people attended and raised $1.45 million dollars to fund valuable research, education, advocacy and services for people in Westchester with breast cancer and their families. The team was lead by Sheryl Braun and Lauren Miller of Greeenacres. The team consisted of Angela Manson, Anthea Carbon, Karyn Aaron, Stefanie Elman, Cheryl Bernstein, Deborah Pekarak, Michelle Memoli, Kathleen Campbell, Jodi Ruzumna, Andi Schreiber, Diane Burkin and Joey Silberfein. They raised a combined total of $12.300 to support this important cause.
The UJA-Federation's Lion of Judah Luncheon took place on Tuesday, October 26th, at The Pierre in New York City. The Lion of Judah luncheon honors philanthropic women; more than 16,000 women around the world are recognized as Lions of Judah, including more than 1,200 in the New York Jewish community.
This year, Scarsdale resident Ruth Suzman was awarded with the Spirit of Peggy Award. The Spirit of Peggy Award honors the memory of Peggy Tishman, an extraordinary woman who set an inspiring standard of service for all women who give their time and hearts to communal leadership. The award honors a young leader in our community who shares Peggy’s passion for dedicated service, generous commitment to philanthropy, and personal devotion to the welfare of the Jewish people.
United Hebrew of New Rochelle, a premier long-term care campus, recently held its 91th Annual Gala Celebration at the Ritz Carlton Westchester in White Plains. United Hebrew Board of Directors member and Mt. Vernon resident, David Alpert, was given the Humanitarian Award. Scarsdale resident, Leonard Tanzer, President of Patient Care Associates, Inc. was awarded the Corporate Medal of Honor. The awards are given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the community and through their efforts have enhanced the quality of life for those in need. Scarsdale Edgemont Girl Scouts seek your donations for American troops in Afghanistan in time for the holidays. There will be a collection box at the Betty Taubert Girl Scout House on Wayside Lane; the Scarsdale Teen Center, 862 Scarsdale Avenue; Scarsdale Village Hall and the Scarsdale Public Library from October 6th thru November 21st 2010.

Style Your Own Pair of TOMS And Give Back

The Scarsdale High School TOMS Club is holding its first Style Your Sole event on Saturday, October 30 in Chase Park from 2 pm to 5 pm. People can participate in the event by pre-ordering a pair of blank, canvas TOMS, which they will pick up and decorate at the park. The TOMS Organization was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie on the simple premise, One for One. For every pair of TOMS shoes purchased, a pair of TOMS shoes is given to a child in need. Since 2006, TOMS has given away over 1 million shoes. Their drop sites include parts of Africa, Asia, America and Eurasia.
Each pair of TOMS is worth $40. Cash or checks made out to cash, along with

To the Editor: Chances are you know a family affected by autism. This devastating, lifelong and little-understood condition now affects 1 in 110 children born today, according to the CDC, yet it is only in the last ten years that the government has begun to address the needs of this burgeoning population.
Congresswoman Nita Lowey has been at the forefront of these efforts. An early and active supporter of autism research, she has served as a high ranking member of both the Congressional Coalition for Autism Research and Education, and the House Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the NIH. She has successfully cosponsored several important bills that dramatically increased funding for autism research related to surveillance, causation, education, early detection, and intervention.
As parents of an autistic child, we appreciate Nita Lowey’s efforts, and believe that she will continue to advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We encourage you to vote for Nita Lowey this Election Day.

The League of Women Voters Welcomes New Members

The League of Women Voters of Scarsdale had a wonderful turnout for their fall membership coffee at the home of Janice Starr in Fox Meadow on Monday October 4th. The League is a non-partisan group that educates voters and studies and speaks out on important local, county, state and national issues. Questions such as a real estate tax revaluation, affordable housing, the formation of a foundation to support our local schools, and the village and school budgets are researched and discussed.
