Organist Paul Jacobs will perform at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church at 6 Greenacres Avenue at 4 pm on Sunday November 17.
An extraordinarily expressive performer and an intensely intelligent musician, Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs is helping the King of Instruments retake its rightful place in classical music. Described by The Chicago Tribune as "one of the most supremely gifted organists of his generation," he unites technical skills of the first order with probing emotional artistry. His performances have transfixed audiences, colleagues and critics alike. Prodigiously talented from his earliest years, at 15 Jacobs was appointed head organist of a parish of 3,500 in his hometown, Washington, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, double-majoring with John Weaver for the organ and Lionel Party for the harpsichord, and at Yale University with Thomas Murray. Jacobs made musical history at the age of 23 when he played J.S. Bach's complete organ works in an 18-hour marathon performance on the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. Professor Jacobs joined the faculty of The Juilliard School in 2003, and was named chairman of the organ department in 2004, one of the youngest faculty appointees in the school's history. He received Juilliard's prestigious William Schuman Scholar's Chair in 2007.
This concert will take place in the Sanctuary on the mighty Walker organ. It will last about one hour, is perfect for adults and children, and will include music by J. S. Bach, Mozart, Schumann, and Guilmant. There is a free reception after the concert to meet the artist and enjoy some fellowship time together. You will not want to miss this amazing performer for this very special occasion. Tickets are $10. Please reserve your tickets in advance by calling the church office at (914) 723-3311 as this event will sell-out. The doors open at 3:30 PM and the seating is open general seating.

Jill S. Krutick will be hosting an Artist Open Studio Weekend Exhibition of her work at her home/studio, JSK Art Studio, located at 32 Tisdale Road, Scarsdale, New York 10583 on November 8th, 9th and 10th from 4pm-7pm each day. Over 100 canvas oil paintings will be on display. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome! RSVP cell: 914.522.0420 or [email protected].
Ms. Krutick, 51, a Roslyn, New York native and Scarsdale resident has reinvented herself, and has become a rising star in the world of art. Having built her first career as an investment analyst studying and advising entertainment and leisure companies, while raising two children, Ms. Krutick is now focused on creating value on the canvas. Influenced by her love of art masters both old and new, such as Van Gogh, Monet and Gerhardt Richter, Ms. Krutick has developed an oeuvre of work that is both abstract and imaginative. "An exploration of my works should reveal as much about a viewer's emotional state as it does mine. The oil painting may be abstract or it may be representational, but what makes the painting come to life is the interplay of light, colors, textures, shapes and spaces," Ms. Krutick suggests.
Since turning her full time attention to art, Ms. Krutick has had numerous solo and group art shows. In 2013, she was juried into the Liz Afif Gallery Sea and Sky Exhibit in Philadelphia. Next spring she will be participating in a group show at the Bronxville Gallery, Objects & Images Fine Art. Recently, she was chosen for a solo exhibition at a gallery housed in the SOHO-based offices of Splashlight, a leading producer of fashion photography and e-commerce content. Artsicle, a leading online art website that encourages emerging artists, named Ms. Krutick a "Trending Artist" -- based on online interest. In addition, she was selected by the offices of Partner's International and A.T. Kearney -- two well-recognized consulting firms -- to have
several of her works in residence.

The Friends of the Scarsdale Library are gearing up for the fourth annual Adult and Teen Spelling Bee, to be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 7:30 PM in the Scarsdale High School Auditorium.
The Spelling Bee, a Scarsdale institution in the making, is an important fund raising event for the Scarsdale Library. Over the past three years, monies raised through the Spelling Bee have been used to make significant technology upgrades to the Library's community room, to enhance the children's room with improved lighting and carpeting, and to plan a business center for the community. Proceeds from this year's Bee will be earmarked for entrance and lobby upgrades, among other enhancements.
The event provides a great evening of entertainment to the community during the winter doldrums. Trivia games, music, a silent auction, and emcee Ed Coleman, the radio voice of the New York Mets, will keep audience members regaled between rounds of the Spelling Bee. Audience members can play along silently with the contestants and cheer for their friends and neighbors participating as contestants.
Participants in the Spelling Bee compete as teams of up to three people. Anyone of high-school age and above may participate, and the entrance fee is $150 per team. Two rounds, the first written, and the second oral, winnow the field of teams down to the finalists and ultimate champions. As three-time contestant Janice Starr notes, "My team-mates and I will be back because this is such a fun event, and there is so much community spirit that evening. Besides, we want a crack at the grand prize and some bragging rights, too."
Besides participating on a spelling team, sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses and individuals. Contact Spelling Bee co-chair Sara Werder at 472-6264 or [email protected] to discuss sponsorship levels.
The deadline to enter as a team is December 31, 2013. Only 20 teams will be accepted, so get your application in soon in order to avoid being shut out of this fun event. Application forms are available at the Library or online at http://www.scarsdalelibrary.org/friends. For more information, contact Sara Werder or her co-chair Renu Lalwani at 917-584-8834 or [email protected].

Though there were concerns about mixing antique cars and acrylic paint when both the Scarsdale Concours and Halloween Window Painting coincided on Sunday October 20th in Scarsdale Village, it turns out that running the two events at once brought even more people to the Village to enjoy a beautiful day, vintage cars and art in the making. It was a win-win for both events and businesses downtown who profited from the extra foot traffic.
Check out these beautiful photos of the day from SHS sophomore Carly Glickenhaus.
