BaerStephen and Arlo BaerResearch shows that kids who learn healthy ways to express and cope with their feelings are more likely to be empathetic and supportive of others, perform better in school and careers, have more positive and stable relationships, and develop a positive sense of self.

In order to help kids deal with their feelings, Edgewood residents Stephen Baer and his eight year-old son Arlo, a third grader at Edgewood, created a card game called Feeling Lucky. It's focused on helping kids identify, understand, express, and manage a wide range of feelings that have been amplified during the pandemic. Feeling Lucky challenges players to express how they feel in a variety of situations and awards players every step of the way.

Over the past few years Arlo has struggled with anxiety and he used his creativity to turn lemons into lemonade. He built a prototype of this game using popsicle sticks and tested it at home. Then his Dad hired an artist to draw each emotion and they produced a small run of cards for friends and family members to test. After getting feedback, they printed a slightly larger run and are now selling copies of the card game.

Dad Stephen Baer is the Chief Creative Officer for The Game Agency, a company that makes video games for K-12 education and corporate training.

His goal is to show Arlo that creative thinking can help solve his anxiety and help plenty of other kids just like him. Learn more and get your own card game on their website here. FeelingLucky

pathbenchThis letter was written by Russell Kopp.

My wife and I visited the pathway for the first time today. We parked (for free) at the Hartsdale Train station, as weekends will let happen, and walked the path to the Scarsdale station and back.

Say what you want about how long it took to complete, or the money spent doing so, or how those funds could have better been spent on feeding the homeless or other social endeavors rather than yet another (paved) pathway we could have lived without.

We're all entitled to our opinions on where tax dollars should flow, as much as I'll report to you that now completed, the developers did what I think is a beautiful job with its design.

But I'll tell you what I don't think is subject to opinion: that same beautiful design, with its winding and sloping (relatively narrow) pathways and tree lined sides will soon I fear, and with frequency, render broken bones or worse as collisions between pedestrians and cyclists inevitably occur.

In the short while we were there, a woman got up from one of its beautiful benches (not otherwise in one of the pathway's bench "cul-de-sacs," but rather right off the pathway) and didn't look both ways before doing so.

Sure, she should have. And I'll bet if she was entering a busy street she would have. But the path's peaceful existence is the same one that for good reasons is its “Achilles heel,” finding the people it relaxes letting their guard down.

“Watch, watch!” my wife and I screamed at her, aware of a bicycle approaching her from behind at high speeds and close distance for the venue.

It was a narrow miss, one I'm sure those already walking also face.

“She thanked us and we all agreed that the woman had no idea what we were initially referring to, admitting that her first instinct was that some bee was about to sting her or something.”

(I must remind myself to say “Freeze, Freeze!” not “Watch, Watch,” to others in such situations given the absence of eyes in the back of our heads, although the former sounds forceful.)

Now, I'm not some anti bicyclist. Last I checked our two wheeled riding friends pay taxes too. But in order to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists safely the path needs signage (ideally electronic) that provides hours during the day for each user, bicyclist and pedestrian, to exist in isolation of the other in the space.

IdoniTimothy Idoni is leading in the Democratic Primary race for County ClerkWith razor-thin margins, it looks like incumbent Timothy Idoni will narrowly squeak out a victory in Westchester County’s Democratic Primary for County Clerk. While absentee ballots have yet to be counted, Idoni is leading his opponent Shanae Williams by a few hundred votes. The County Clerk primary was the only race on the ballot in Scarsdale for the June 22 election.

Established in 1683, the Westchester County Clerk is the oldest elected office in the county. The clerk is responsible for maintaining and preserving the official documents and records for the county. The clerk is also the Registrar of county land transactions and liens as well as the Court clerk of the Supreme Court and the County Court. The clerk serves a dual role as a County Official as well as a New York State Constitutional Officer.

In the primary, voters chose between incumbent Timothy Idoni and newcomer Shanae Williams. Idoni ran for reelection for his fifth term, which would make him the third-longest serving Westchester Clerk. After working for five years as the Village Manager of Ardsley, Idoni served four terms as the mayor of New Rochelle from 1991-2005. He has held his position as Westchester County Clerk since 2006. As Clerk, Idoni has diversified the office staff and saved millions in taxpayer money.

Williams announced her run to oust Idoni in December 2020 and declared that it was time for a fresh start. Williams, a Yonkers Councilwoman, immigrated from Kingston, Jamaica to Yonkers when she was nine years old. She interned and then worked in the New York State Assembly before working in the Yonkers mayor’s office for six years. Williams won her council seat in 2018. Speaking about this primary race, she stated that the clerk’s office “could be like a hub of resources for people in Westchester County, but I think it’s totally underutilized… that’s my motivation for running for this office. I think we can do a lot more to really bring services and resources directly into communities especially into marginalized communities.”

The Westchester Democratic Party and the Working Families Party endorsed Idoni, as well as many Democratic elected officials. Williams was endorsed by Democratic Assembly Members Nader Sayegh and Mike Spano as well as other Yonkers officials.

Overall, turnout for this primary race was exceptionally low across Scarsdale. In many Scarsdale districts, fewer than 10 or 15 residents came out to vote. Countywide, the latest results show Idoni with 15,046 votes (51%) and Williams with 14,725 votes (49%). These figures do not reflect absentee ballots, which could cut into Idoni’s lead.
