What really happens behind the closed doors of the Admissions Office? On Monday, October 6, 2014 from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale, the deans and directors of a number of top colleges and universities will open those doors and dispel the myths about what it takes to get into college. This is the seventh year in a row this program is being presented.
The free community-wide event – "Inside the Admissions Office" -- is co-sponsored by the JCC of Mid-Westchester, BBYO, and Woolf College Consulting. Students and parents will hear the real story behind how decisions are made from the deans and directors of Binghamton University, Franklin and Marshall College, Swarthmore College, Syracuse, Union College, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University. The evening will give the public the opportunity to learn the differences and similarities in how decisions are made by selective universities and liberal arts colleges. Moderated by Mamaroneck-based college admissions consultant Betsy F. Woolf of Woolf College Consulting, students and parents will learn:
·What makes a student's application "stand out";
·The impact of the current economic reality on college admissions;
·How an admissions staff makes the ultimate decision to admit, deny or defer;
·How colleges weigh grades, test scores, family connections, athletics, campus visits, interviews, essays and other factors;
·The institutional needs and policies behind the decision-making;
·The difference between a well-rounded student and a well-rounded class – and why that is important in college admissions;
·Whether declaring certain majors gives students a leg up in the admissions process;
·How admissions committees treat the application of a student who discloses his or her learning difference or ADHD.
JCC Academic Center offers a wide range of SAT, PSAT, ACT, SAT Subject Test, Regents prep, speed reading and college admissions programs designed to help high school students reach their greatest academic potential. Academic Center classes are small, allowing for individualized attention and are led by dynamic, experienced instructors. New Sidewalk on Brewster Road

Returning students and their parents will be pleased to find a new sidewalk and curbing extending along the Brewster Road side of Scarsdale High School to Hartcourt Road. The sidewalk now extends the entire span from the intersection of Brewster and Olmstead Road to Harcourt Road and Wayside Lane. A section of sidewalk roughly 120 feet in length was also added on the west side of Brewster Road from Ogden Road south. This sidewalk, on the side of the street where on-street parking is provided, will allow for safe pedestrian access across Brewster Road via a new crosswalk to the main driveway entrance to the school.
According to Deputy Village Manager Steve Pappalardo, the work was done as part of the South Fox Meadow Stormwater Improvement Project to alleviate flooding along Brewster Road and in the parking lot in front of the school where ducks often swam after rainstorms. There are openings in the new curbing to allow for stormwater to pass through and empty into a drainage swale constructed between the curbing and sidewalk. Stormwater from the west side of Brewster Road will also empty to new catch basins connected to a new 18" storm drain line which will empty to a new settling basin located within Harcourt Woods. Both the drainage swale and basin will filter pollutants from the stormwater before it empties into the open watercourse in Harcourt Woods. Sections of the open watercourse have been de-silted and cleared of vegetation obstructing its flow.
This work will continue over the next few months and much of the stream banks stabilized with the installation of vegetated gabion stone baskets. This bank stabilization work will help maintain the desired stream bank slope while reducing erosion. Additional landscaping in the watercourse area is also planned. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of the calendar year.

Java Crave on Garth Road

Starbucks has a new competitor in Scarsdale. Serious coffee drinkers have already welcomed Java Crave Caffé to Garth Road. The Caffé, which is owned by the same folks who run the popular "Slave to the Grind" in Bronxville offers an appealing selection of organic coffees, both caffeinated and de-caf ,hot or iced. As I write this I am sipping on an iced Hazelnut decaf with milk that could not be more delicious. This week, they were serving iced coffee in many flavors including Columbian, Hazelnut, French Vanilla, 
Coconut, Sugar Cookies, Coffee Cake, Red Velvet and Oatmeal Cookie. Their sign says that all flavored coffees are made with natural ingredients and contain no synthetic syrups.
The big espresso machine is impressive and the roomy shop offers tables where you can chat with a friend or use their free wifi to get some work done. During the morning hours, the caffé also sells fresh baked cheese danish, croissants, and scones to enjoy with your coffee or tea.... Try the Chai tea latte!
They are open seven days a week until 9 pm.

Scarsdale Summer Youth Tennis Tournament Team Sign Up

The New York Junior Tennis and Learning - Scarsdale Chapter and the Scarsdale Recreation Department are looking for Scarsdale Youth boys and girls from ages 9 to18 to represent and play for the Scarsdale Summer Youth Tennis League Teams in the Greater New Youth Junior Tennis and Learning Jamboree Tennis Team Tournament to be held on Friday, August 8th. Youth players can sign up and practice from Monday, August 4th through Thursday, August 7th from 6 to 8 PM at the Middle School Tennis Courts.
The registration fee is $ 40 and includes a special " Scarsdale NYJTL 30th Anniversary Tee Shirt " and a participation trophy. The teams will have a concluding pizza and ice cream party.
Youth and parents interested in participating on the Scarsdale Youth Tennis Teams should contact Bob Harrison, volunteer director and coach of the teams , at 725-0962 or by email at proscars@aol.com or show up at the Scarsdale Middle School Tennis Courts next week.
