Lunar Leela - The Divine Play of Moon Light and Shadows
By Dhaval Rajen Jhaveri
Originally from Ahmedabad India, I now reside with my family in Old Bethpage, New York.
Why the Full Moon, You May Ask
The Moon and the Sun are the two celestial bodies most visible to us. Yes, stars are visible too, but size matters. And unlike the Sun, we can gaze at the Moon for hours without straining our eyes. The majestic Moon, floating serenely in the sky, offers us glimpses into the dazzling universe beyond. One glance at a Full Moon, and you might find yourself, as I did, completely in love with the cosmos!
A Childhood Memory
My fascination with the Moon began around age 10 on a road trip to Rajasthan (India). Near Jaisalmer, I watched a Full Moon rise—huge, surreal, almost planet-like. I didn’t have a camera, but the memory is vivid: sunlight shimmering on a massive pink-orange sphere with a mirage-like glow. It was my first encounter with the Moon’s grandeur, and it left me awestruck. An object floating 382,500 km away somehow made the universe feel closer.
A Lifelong Connection
Growing up, we celebrated various auspicious Poonams (Full Moon nights), with the Moon shining brightly above. That connection stayed with me, even as life moved on, filled with work, family, hustle, and the inevitable rat race.
Capturing the Moon
There’s a unique excitement in waiting for the Full Moon to make its appearance. I often wait for it to rise high enough to be visible from my home - weather permitting, of course. Over the years, I’ve missed many Full Moons due to overcast skies, but that is nature’s way. I often walk or drive around, searching for that perfect view.
During one of these walks, I discovered the beauty of the Full Moon framed by trees, vines, and branches. Since then, I’ve focused on capturing these natural silhouettes against the luminous backdrop of the Moon. Each season offers a different view; even a few steps right or left completely change the perspective. Sometimes, I find myself braving extreme cold, but the reward is always worth it. What you see here today are some of those moments captured through my lens.
Remember, there are only 12 Full Moons in a year, and weather permitting, you might catch only a few of them. My point is—each Full Moon is precious, beautiful, and quite literally out of this world. So, step outside, watch the Full Moon with your loved ones, and let yourself fall in love with this magnificent universe!

Scarsdale Alum Searching for Kidney Donor
Wed. 6 May, 2026 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Dear Scarsdale:
It isn’t every day that you are asked to help save a life. Today is that day.
Byron Mallis, Class of 2002, needs a kidney. An autoimmune disease has destroyed both of his kidneys. He is on daily dialysis, and getting his life back requires a living kidney donor. We are asking you to learn about kidney donation at an event being held on May 6 at 7 p.m. at
Congregation Kol Ami (252 Soundview Ave., White Plains). And we are asking you to help save his life.
Byron grew up in the Greenacres section of Scarsdale. He spent babyhood through fourth grade on Ridgecrest West, and fifth grade through high school graduation on Oak Way. His parents, Laurie Thomas and Chuck Mallis, were a constant presence on ballfields and at school events for Byron and his younger siblings, Jillian (’07) and Ian (’09). Laurie worked at The Journal News and hosted many class trips touring the newspaper (we think at least one Greenacres student was inspired to pursue a career in journalism as a result!).
Byron is the loving husband of Kayla, and the father of an almost three-year-old boy named Charlie (named for Chuck, who passed away in 2009). Byron wants to be able to do all the things he got to do with his own father. Among his favorite father-son Scarsdale memories: learning to swim at the Scarsdale Pool, rollerblading in the empty high school parking lot, learning to drive on the Bronx River Parkway, playing on the soccer, baseball, and lacrosse teams, birthday parties at Our Place video arcade, the annual planting of red, white, and blue flowers in front of the house, and many more. Kidney disease is getting in the way. No swimming, no strenuous exercise, no hands in the dirt.
We are turning to the Scarsdale community: people who grew up with Byron, people who know our family, neighbors, merchants, teachers—anyone who will choose to learn more about donation and consider how they might be the one to save his life.
We are working with an organization called Renewal, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit dedicated to saving lives by facilitating live-donor kidney transplants. If you cannot attend the May 6 event but are interested in learning more about becoming a donor, you can click on this link. You can also request a simple at-home cheek swab kit to find out if you might be a match. (Note: Byron’s legal name is Spears Byron Mallis.)

Cracking the Code - Mystery and Thriller Fiction with Geoff Loftus at Scarsdale Library
Tuesday, May 19, 6:00 PM
Are you caught up in trying to figure out who put those thirteen dead bodies in the basement? Not to mention why and how they ended up there? Or do you prefer a straight-up confrontation of good guys versus bad guys? Who, why, and how form the basis of a mystery. The conflict of good and bad is a thriller. What makes a mystery different from a thriller? And what about tales of suspense? Or action novels? Join local writer Geoff Loftus as he explains how authors use elements of these genres to craft interesting narratives and engaging characters that keep readers turning the page. Along the way, he will offer examples from his own Jack Tyrrell thrillers.
